Description
Domaine de La Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2021 is a poised, deeply-fruited southern Rhône red that balances power with finesse. Built around old-vine Grenache and its classic Rhône partners, it offers dark fruit intensity wrapped in a silk-smooth yet energetic texture. This cuvée captures the timeless character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a historic appellation that has defined fine, ageworthy Rhône reds for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 shows a deep ruby to garnet hue with vibrant clarity, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with layers of blackberries and blackcurrants, interwoven with notes of violets, subtle garrigue herbs, crushed stones, and a touch of warm spice.
On the palate, it is supple and silky, yet structured and nervy, with ripe dark fruit at the core—blackberry compote, cassis and black cherry—supported by fine, chalky tannins. Floral tones of violet and a whisper of licorice and pepper bring lift and complexity. The finish is long and elegant, with a savoury, mineral edge that keeps the wine precise rather than heavy. While already approachable in its youth, the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin suggests excellent aging potential over the next 15–20 years.
Production
Sourced from classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs of galets roulés (rounded stones), sand and clay-limestone soils, this wine reflects the region’s warm Mediterranean climate tempered by the Mistral wind. Old-vine Grenache forms the backbone, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, all harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful fruit selection. In the cellar, traditional Rhône vinification is employed: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentation, and maturation in a mix of vats and large neutral oak, preserving purity of fruit while building texture and structure without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural partner for richly flavored, slow-cooked and grilled dishes. It shines with herb-crusted roast lamb, braised beef stews, grilled meats, game birds, and Provençal-inspired dishes featuring olives, thyme and rosemary. Hard cheeses and aged semi-soft cheeses also pair beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help open the aromatics and soften the tannins, while older bottles can be decanted briefly to remove sediment.
Producer
Founded in the early 1970s by Aimé Sabon, Domaine de La Janasse has grown from a modest family estate into one of the benchmark producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the southern Rhône. Today, the estate is run by the next generation, who have elevated quality through meticulous vineyard work and sensitive, terroir-driven winemaking. La Janasse is particularly renowned for its mastery of old-vine Grenache and its ability to craft wines that are both rich and refined, earning consistently high acclaim and helping to define the modern, yet classically rooted style of the region.
