Domaine de la Janasse, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2022

Domaine de la Janasse Cuvée Chaupin is an exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape made exclusively from Grenache grown in the renowned Chaupin vineyard. Originally created for the American market, its success has brought this distinctive cuvée to European wine lovers as well. Unfiltered and marked by remarkable freshness, it offers an elegant interpretation of one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated appellations.

Tasting Notes
The 2022 vintage presents a deep ruby-red colour with attractive garnet highlights. Its expressive nose combines ripe red and black berries with floral notes, Mediterranean herbs, spice and a subtle touch of sweet oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet notably fresh, with concentrated fruit, refined tannins and a long, savoury finish. The balance between richness and freshness gives it excellent ageing potential; it can be enjoyed now with decanting, while further complexity should develop over the next 8–12 years when well stored.

Production
This cuvée is produced from 100% Grenache from the Chaupin vineyard, one of Domaine de la Janasse’s distinguished individual terroirs. The grapes undergo a 22-day maceration on their skins to extract colour, structure and flavour. The wine is then matured in a combination of 30% new oak barrels and 70% large oak foudres. It is bottled unfiltered, preserving its natural texture and character; a small amount of sediment may therefore occur.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. Cuvée Chaupin is a natural match for roast lamb, beef, game, duck and slow-cooked Mediterranean dishes, as well as ratatouille and mature hard cheeses. Decant for 1–2 hours when serving young to open the aromas and soften the structure; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all, to avoid losing their aromatic finesse.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967, when Aimé Sabon took over the family’s vineyards and chose to create his own estate rather than continue delivering grapes to a cooperative. Named after the family farm in Courthézon, the domaine has grown from 15 hectares to around 90 hectares and is now managed by Aimé alongside the next generation, including Christophe Sabon and Isabelle. With more than 60 separate parcels, Domaine de la Janasse draws on a remarkable mosaic of terroirs and has become one of the leading names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its special cuvées, including Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières, showcase the estate’s ability to express individual vineyard sites.
