Domaine de la Janasse, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2021

Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2021 is a distinctive, single-vineyard cuvée made exclusively from Grenache grown in the renowned Chaupin parcel. Unfiltered and celebrated for its combination of ripe southern Rhône character and remarkable freshness, it was originally created for the American market before becoming available in Europe. It is one of Domaine de la Janasse’s most sought-after special cuvées.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. Its expressive nose reveals ripe red and dark berries, alongside floral notes, Mediterranean herbs, spice and subtle, well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is generous and concentrated, with flavours of raspberry, blackberry and plum balanced by lively freshness. Fine tannins and a long, persistent finish give the wine both elegance and structure. The 2021 vintage’s freshness makes this a particularly vibrant expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is approachable with decanting, but will develop greater complexity over the next 8–12 years when properly stored, revealing more savoury, spicy and earthy nuances.

Production
Cuvée Chaupin is produced from 100% Grenache from the Chaupin vineyard, one of Domaine de la Janasse’s distinguished parcels. The grapes are vinified according to traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape methods, with a 22-day maceration on the skins to extract colour, aroma and structure. After fermentation, approximately 30% of the wine is matured in new oak barrels, while the remaining 70% rests in large oak foudres. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve its character and depth.

Food & Serving
Its ripe fruit, freshness and supple structure make it an excellent match for roast lamb, beef stew, duck, venison and richly flavoured Mediterranean dishes. It also pairs well with grilled meats, Provençal herbs and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s aromas and texture to open fully. Older bottles should be decanted carefully to separate any natural sediment.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over the family vineyards in Courthézon and chose to create his own estate rather than continue sending the grapes to a cooperative. What began with around 15 hectares has grown to approximately 90 hectares, spread across more than sixty parcels and a mosaic of diverse terroirs. Christophe Sabon joined his father in 1991, followed by Isabelle in 2001, and together the family has established Domaine de la Janasse as one of the leading names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate’s parcel-based approach is expressed in special cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
