Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Cuvée Chaupin shows a deep garnet core with soft brick hues at the rim, reflecting its evolution in bottle. The nose is inviting and nuanced, with aromas of ripe red and black cherries, dried plum, pressed violets, garrigue herbs, fine leather, and a touch of sweet spice and dried rose petal. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet supple, with a loose-knit, open texture that makes it immediately approachable. Flavors of macerated cherry, strawberry compote, dried fig, and plum are layered with notes of tobacco leaf, leather, and a gentle savory undertone. Tannins are polished and resolved, and the acidity brings balance rather than power, making for a smooth, graceful finish. The 2011 is fully in its drinking window and should continue to give pleasure for a few more years, but it is best enjoyed now through the near term rather than held for extended aging.

Production
Cuvée Chaupin is Domaine de la Janasse’s pure Grenache cuvée, sourced primarily from the La Janasse sector in the cooler, northeastern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where deep, sandy soils favor finesse and aromatic lift over sheer power. The vines are old (many 60+ years), naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar to retain only the healthiest bunches. Vinification typically involves a traditional fermentation in concrete or stainless steel vats, often with a proportion of whole clusters to enhance complexity and structure, followed by aging for around 16–18 months in a mix of larger foudres and older demi-muids, allowing the wine to develop texture and depth without heavy oak imprint.

Food & Serving
This mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs beautifully with slow-braised lamb shanks, roast duck, herb-crusted pork loin, or game birds such as guinea fowl. It also works well alongside truffled poultry, ratatouille, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine unfurl and shed any remaining bottle stiffness, but avoid prolonged aeration to preserve its more delicate, tertiary nuances.
