Description
Domaine de la Janasse’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 is a full-bodied yet finely balanced Rhône red, combining generous black-fruit character with floral freshness and a polished, silky texture. Made from carefully selected grapes and matured in a combination of oak vessels, it offers both immediate appeal and the structure to develop further in bottle. The wine reflects the long-standing tradition of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the Southern Rhône’s most celebrated appellations.
Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, this 2023 vintage opens with inviting aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant, complemented by delicate violet notes. On the palate, it is full and well structured, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, refined tannins and a subtle edge that keeps the wine lively. The finish is long, smooth and silky, with a pleasing balance between richness and freshness.
Enjoyable now with a short period of aeration, the wine should gain added complexity over the next several years. Its concentration and structure suggest good medium- to long-term cellaring potential, provided it is stored in suitable conditions.
Production
The wine is produced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the warm Mediterranean climate of the Southern Rhône, where the region’s varied soils and abundant sunshine help create richly flavoured, structured reds. The grapes are harvested by hand, with selection carried out in the vineyard to ensure only healthy, fully ripe fruit is used. Around 80% of the fruit is destemmed before undergoing a 21- to 28-day maceration, accompanied by daily manual punch-downs or pressing. The wine is then matured for 12 months, with 80% aged in larger oak casks and 20% in barriques, one third of which are new.
Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural match for roasted or grilled lamb, beef, venison and other richly flavoured red meats. It also pairs well with Provençal dishes, slow-cooked stews, herb-crusted vegetables and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 30–60 minutes before serving, particularly when enjoyed young, to allow the fruit and floral aromas to open fully.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse is a respected family-run estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, founded by Aimé Sabon in the 1970s and now associated with the Sabon family’s meticulous approach to vineyard work and winemaking. The domaine has played an important role in the modern development of the appellation, gaining recognition for expressive, terroir-driven Rhône wines that combine depth with elegance. Its careful vineyard selection, low-intervention handling and considered use of oak have helped establish Domaine de la Janasse as one of the region’s notable producers.
