Description

Domaine de la Clapière Gatefer 2022 is a generous, fruit-driven red from the heart of the Languedoc, near Pézenas. Its distinctive blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Syrah, bringing together Bordeaux structure and the warm, Mediterranean character of southern France. Made from low-yielding vineyards and crafted with carbonic maceration, it offers impressive richness while retaining a supple, easy-drinking style.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, Gatefer opens with inviting aromas of ripe dark berries, blackcurrant and plum, complemented by hints of spice and Mediterranean warmth. On the palate, the wine is full-flavoured and rounded, with juicy fruit, smooth tannins and a gentle savoury character from the Syrah. Carbonic maceration enhances its vibrant fruit and gives the wine a particularly soft, silky texture, followed by a long, mellow finish. This is an approachable red that can be enjoyed young for its freshness and generous fruit. It should develop additional softness and harmony over the next few years, provided it is stored in a cool, dark place.

Production
Gatefer comes from seven hectares of Domaine de la Clapière’s vineyards, where yields are kept below 35 hectolitres per hectare to encourage concentration and character. The domaine’s Mediterranean setting near Montagnac provides warm conditions well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Grapes from the individual parcels are kept separate in the cellar, allowing each lot to be handled according to its character before the final blend is assembled. The wine is fermented using carbonic maceration, a technique associated with Beaujolais that emphasises freshness, vibrant fruit and a supple texture.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly cool, at around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s juicy fruit and smooth character. It is a natural match for grilled or roasted meats, lamb, sausages, burgers and Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs, peppers or aubergine. It also works well with mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, although a short 20–30 minute aeration can help the wine open and reveal more of its aromatic depth.

Producer
Domaine de la Clapière is situated near the village of Montagnac, close to Pézenas, in the Languedoc between Montpellier and Béziers. The estate covers around 30 hectares, with approximately 36 hectares dedicated to viticulture according to the supplied estate information, and reflects the warm, robust style of Mediterranean southern France. Sophie and Xavier Palatsi lead the domaine with a strong focus on expressing the land, supported by renowned oenologist Jean Natoli. His careful parcel-by-parcel approach, combined with low yields and precise blending, underpins the estate’s ambition to continually raise the quality of its wines.
