Description
Domaine de Courcel Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2022 is a refined introduction to one of Pommard’s most historic estates, offering Burgundy lovers an elegant, terroir-driven red at a more accessible level. Crafted from Pinot Noir grown in and around the Domaine’s home in the Côte de Beaune, it captures the hallmark purity, structure and finesse that define the house style. Rooted in centuries of winemaking tradition, this regional Bourgogne provides a glimpse into the depth and character that have made Domaine de Courcel a benchmark in the village of Pommard.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir shows a bright, translucent ruby color with youthful violet hues at the rim. The nose is delicately expressive, opening with fresh red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with subtle notes of rose petal, crushed stone, and a hint of sweet spice.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, supple, and finely textured, with juicy red fruit at its core—think cherry, redcurrant and a touch of cranberry. Gentle, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity give it poise and drinkability, while a faint earthy, mineral streak adds complexity and a distinctly Burgundian character. The finish is clean and precise, with lingering red fruit and a whisper of spice. Best enjoyed over the next 3–6 years, it will develop a little more complexity with short-term cellaring but is already very approachable in its youth.
Production
Sourced from Pinot Noir vines in the Bourgogne appellation zones close to Pommard, this wine reflects the limestone-rich clay soils and cool continental climate that make Burgundy so distinctive. The 2022 harvest was carried out by hand, allowing for careful selection of healthy, optimally ripe bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally destemmed (with a possible small proportion of whole clusters, depending on the vintage) and fermented in temperature-controlled vats, using gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak, largely older barrels, for a modest period to add texture and harmony without overt oak flavor, before being bottled to retain its fresh, vibrant fruit character.
Food & Serving
This Bourgogne Pinot Noir is highly versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, herb-crusted pork, veal, charcuterie, and lighter game dishes such as duck breast or rabbit. It also complements mushroom-based dishes, grilled salmon or tuna, and soft to semi-firm cheeses like Brie, Reblochon, and Tomme. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–61°F) for optimal expression of aroma and freshness. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up and reveal more of its floral and spicy nuances, especially in its first few years.
Producer
Domaine de Courcel is one of Pommard’s oldest and most respected family estates, with roots dating back to the 17th century. Still family-owned and managed, the domaine is known for its collection of prime holdings in Pommard’s top vineyards, particularly premier crus, and for producing ageworthy wines of depth, structure, and classical Burgundian character. Over generations, Domaine de Courcel has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and traditional yet precise winemaking, making it a reference point in the Côte de Beaune. Its regional Bourgogne bottling reflects the same care and philosophy applied to its more famous crus, offering a genuine taste of this historic Pommard estate’s style and terroir.
