Description

Domaine de Chevalier 2023 is a distinguished red from Pessac-Léognan and one of the classified growths of the Graves region. Known for combining Bordeaux’s classic structure with an unusually refined, expressive character, it offers impressive precision and the potential to develop beautifully with age.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby to purple colour, with an inviting nose of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside violet, graphite, cedar and subtle smoky oak. On the palate, it is refined and finely structured, balancing concentrated dark fruit with fresh acidity, polished tannins and a mineral, savoury finish. The 2023 vintage is already approachable with decanting, but its structure and balance suggest excellent medium- to long-term ageing potential. It should gain additional complexity over the next 10–20 years when stored in suitable cellar conditions.

Production
Domaine de Chevalier’s vineyards are rooted in the gravelly soils typical of Pessac-Léognan, which provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve both depth and freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and smaller proportions of the other traditional Bordeaux varieties.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for approximately 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s aromas and tannins to open. It pairs particularly well with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck, grilled or roasted mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. With further bottle age, it will be especially rewarding alongside richly flavoured, slow-cooked dishes.

Producer
Domaine de Chevalier is a renowned estate in Léognan and a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, with a history stretching back several centuries. The property gained renewed prominence under the Bernard family, who acquired it in the 1980s and strengthened its reputation for producing elegant, age-worthy wines. Today, the estate is widely regarded as one of the leading producers of both red and white wine in Pessac-Léognan.
