Description

White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a genuine rarity, and Domaine de Beaurenard’s 2016 biodynamic cuvée shows exactly why it deserves a place among the great whites of the Rhône. Crafted from a classic blend of Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne, this wine marries opulence with precision in a way few southern Rhône whites can. Its deep roots in one of France’s most historic appellations, combined with Beaurenard’s meticulous organic and biodynamic farming, make it a standout bottle for collectors and adventurous white wine lovers alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is luminous and textured, showing a pale golden hue with hints of green at the rim that signal both freshness and concentration. The nose is generous and layered, offering sun‑kissed citrus (lemon curd, tangerine zest) alongside ripe yellow stone fruits, white peach and apricot. Floral tones of acacia and hawthorn weave through subtler notes of crushed stone, honeycomb, and a faint anise or fennel lift, giving the bouquet wonderful complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and mouth-filling yet remarkably balanced. Ripe orchard and yellow fruits are wrapped in a vibrant, saline-mineral backbone, with the varieties each adding their voice: Clairette brings freshness, Roussanne adds texture and a waxy, almost nutty depth, while Picpoul and Bourboulenc contribute a bright, zesty line of acidity. Fine phenolic grip and a gentle tannic structure frame the fruit, creating a sense of tension rather than heaviness. The finish is long, layered and evolving, revealing citrus oil, stony minerality and a subtle, savory spice with each sip. This 2016 has the concentration and structure to age beautifully for 8–12 years from vintage, developing more honeyed, truffled and nutty nuances over time while retaining its core of freshness.

Production
Domaine de Beaurenard farms its Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards biodynamically, drawing on the classic southern Rhône terroir of sun-drenched plateaus strewn with galets roulés (large rounded stones), limestone subsoils and patches of sandy clay. These soils, together with the mistral wind and generous Provençal sunshine, create ideal conditions for low-yielding, naturally concentrated white grapes. Grapes for the Blanc are typically harvested by hand to allow strict selection in the vineyard and careful handling of the delicate fruit. In the cellar, the varieties are vinified with a focus on preserving aromatics and texture—gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation and élevage that may include a mix of stainless steel and large oak or neutral barrels, allowing the wine to gain breadth and complexity without overt oak imprint. The result is a biodynamic white that captures both the richness and the mineral clarity of its historic terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that pairs beautifully with refined dishes: think lobster with herb butter, scallops in a saffron or citrus cream sauce, roasted turbot, or richer poultry dishes such as tarragon roast chicken or guinea fowl with morel cream. It also works superbly with truffle-inflected cuisine, Mediterranean fish stews, and aged hard cheeses or semi-soft cheeses like Comté and Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended for bottles with a few years of age, as it helps the wine open up and reveal its full spectrum of fruit, floral and mineral notes.

Producer
Domaine de Beaurenard is one of the long-standing, family-owned estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots in the region stretching back several generations. Situated in the southern Rhône, the domaine has become a reference point for both red and white wines from the appellation, championing organic and biodynamic viticulture well before it became widely adopted. Their commitment to low yields, hand harvesting and meticulous vineyard work has earned them a strong reputation among critics and sommeliers for wines that are both expressive of terroir and built to age. Beaurenard’s cuvées regularly feature in discussions of benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape, underscoring the estate’s importance in preserving the region’s heritage while pushing quality ever higher.
