Description

Domaine de Beaurenard Châteauneuf-du-Pape *Le Lieu Dit* Rouge Bio 2021 is a striking example of how power and finesse can coexist in the southern Rhône. Rather than leaning into sheer force, this certified organic, single-parcel (lieu-dit) cuvée focuses on purity, balance, and detail. It’s a Châteauneuf-du-Pape for those who appreciate the appellation’s famous depth, but prefer it wrapped in elegance rather than excess.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 *Le Lieu Dit* Rouge shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with a subtle purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with dark berries—think blackberry, black cherry, and ripe plum—layered with earthy undertones, a whisper of dried tobacco leaf, and a touch of garrigue. Fine, well-integrated barrique notes add nuance rather than dominance, contributing hints of subtle spice, cedar, and cocoa without ever tipping into overt oakiness or jammy sweetness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, yet remarkably poised. The dark fruit is ripe but not heavy, framed by a fresh, well-defined acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Silky, finely woven tannins provide structure without harshness, allowing the complex spice, earth, and savory mineral notes to unfold gradually across the mid-palate. The finish is long, layered, and resonant, with a deep, almost haunting spice and tobacco-tinged echo that lingers. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it will gain further complexity and refinement over the next 8–15 years.

Production
Sourced from a carefully defined single parcel in the southern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, *Le Lieu Dit* Rouge reflects the classic terroir of the region: sun-drenched slopes, well-draining soils rich in stones and minerals, and the influence of the Mistral wind that helps keep the vines healthy. The blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault is farmed organically (Bio) and typically harvested by hand to ensure precise selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Domaine de Beaurenard focuses on gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and careful élevage in well-chosen barrels. Oak is used as a framing element rather than a dominant voice, resulting in a wine that is both textural and transparent to its origin.

Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a versatile gastronomic partner, shining alongside herb-crusted lamb, slow-braised beef, duck breast with berry or wine reductions, and richly flavored game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine—think roasted vegetables with thyme and rosemary, ratatouille, wild mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and fine tannins. A decant of 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to fully open, with shorter aeration needed as it develops more bottle age.

Producer
Domaine de Beaurenard is a historic, family-run estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, long recognized as one of the appellation’s reference producers. Over generations, the estate has built a reputation for wines that balance the natural richness of the southern Rhône with a clear sense of place and precision. Today, Beaurenard is known not only for its deep roots in the region but also for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, enhancing the clarity and authenticity of its wines. Their cuvées, including carefully crafted single-parcel bottlings like *Le Lieu Dit* Rouge, are regularly praised by critics and collectors alike for their elegance, longevity, and faithful expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s great terroir.
