Description
Domaine d'Ardhuy Gevrey-Chambertin Bio 2023 is a classic expression of northern Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir, crafted from organically grown vines in some of Gevrey’s most characterful lieux-dits. This is a refined yet powerful red Burgundy that balances depth of fruit with the region’s signature structure and minerality. Sourced from old vines and raised in carefully judged oak, it offers a genuine glimpse into one of Burgundy’s most revered villages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Gevrey-Chambertin shows a luminous ruby to deep garnet hue, with a vibrant, youthful rim that hints at its energy and aging potential. The nose opens with pure red and dark berry tones—think wild raspberry, black cherry and redcurrant—layered with notes of violet, crushed rose petals and subtle forest floor. With air, more complex nuances emerge: hints of graphite, wet stone, fine spice and a discreet touch of vanilla and toasted oak.
On the palate, the wine is elegant yet firmly structured, with a silken texture wrapped around a core of concentrated fruit. Juicy cherry and raspberry are framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything precise and fresh. Savory undertones—dried herbs, a touch of game, and earthy minerality—add depth and length to the finish. While already approachable in its youth after a short aeration, this 2023 has the balance and structure to develop beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and nuance.
Production
The fruit for this wine comes from several well-situated parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, notably Le Fourneau, La Croix des Champs, La Platière and Creux Brouillard. These gently sloping sites rest on classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils with a high proportion of limestone scree and weathered rock, ideal for producing Pinot Noir with both concentration and tension. Farmed organically, the vineyards are worked with respect for biodiversity and soil life, and yields are kept low to favor quality over quantity. Harvesting is done by hand with strict selection in the vineyard, ensuring only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes make it to the winery. The bunches are fully destemmed, then undergo a traditional fermentation on the skins over roughly 12 to 14 days, allowing for a controlled extraction of color, flavor and tannin. The wine is then aged a little over a year in French oak barriques, around one-third of which are new, lending subtle structure and spice without overpowering the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside classic dishes such as roast duck, coq au vin, herb-crusted rack of lamb or veal with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, charcuterie, and earthy fare like mushroom risotto, truffle dishes or aged, semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and finely etched structure. For optimal enjoyment, open the bottle 30–60 minutes in advance or give it a gentle decant when young, which will help the wine unfurl its layered bouquet and soften the tannins.
