Description

Domaine d'Ardhuy Clos des Langres Rouge Monopole 2021 is a distinctive Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most storied walled vineyards. This monopole lies exactly on the border between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, giving the wine a character that elegantly bridges power and finesse. With vines averaging around 50 years of age and a history of viticulture dating back to the 10th century, this cuvée captures both the depth of its terroir and the refinement of classic Burgundy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos des Langres 2021 shows a luminous, medium ruby colour with delicate garnet hints at the rim, reflecting its finesse-driven style. The nose is charming and expressive, opening with red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry, followed by notes of rose petals, crushed herbs, fine spice, and a touch of earth and chalky minerality. Subtle barrique influence adds hints of vanilla bean, clove, and light toast without dominating the fruit. On the palate, the wine is precise and silken, with a juicy core of red berries, cranberry, and red currant wrapped in fine-grained tannins. The limestone-rich soils lend a vibrant acidity and a distinct, mouthwatering mineral line that carries through the long, elegant finish. Oak is very well-judged, supporting rather than masking the natural delicacy of Pinot Noir. Enjoyable now with some aeration, this 2021 has the structure and freshness to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years, gaining more sous-bois, truffle, and savoury nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Clos des Langres is a historic, walled vineyard sitting at the meeting point of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, rooted in limestone-rich soils with clay and marl that are ideal for Pinot Noir. The domaine farms old vines averaging around 50 years, leading naturally to low yields and concentrated berries. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting in the vineyard and cellar to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often with a portion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and structure, followed by élevage in French barriques. While oak aging is traditional in Burgundy, Domaine d’Ardhuy deliberately uses it in a restrained way, aiming to preserve the vineyard’s elegance, purity of fruit, and terroir transparency rather than impart heavy oak signatures.

Food & Serving
This refined Burgundy Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (especially duck or guinea fowl), veal, pork tenderloin, and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle. It also complements game birds, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses such as Reblochon, Tomme, or a mild, earthy Brie. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it ages, a gentle splash decant just before serving is sufficient to release its more complex, tertiary nuances.

Producer
Domaine d’Ardhuy is a respected family estate in Burgundy with deep roots and a strong presence in both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The Clos des Langres vineyard itself has been planted since the 10th century, when monks from Cluny first recognised the site’s exceptional potential for fine wine. Over the years, the domaine has become closely associated with this monopole, whose walled parcels and central manor house form the historic heart of the estate. Known for careful vineyard work, thoughtful use of oak, and a commitment to expressing individual terroirs, Domaine d’Ardhuy holds a significant place among quality-focused Burgundy producers, with Clos des Langres standing as one of its flagship wines.
