Description
Domaine Danjean-Berthoux’s Mercurey Les Velleys 2020 is a powerful Burgundy red from the Côte Chalonnaise, combining ripe fruit with spicy, toasted oak character. Made from Pinot Noir, it reflects the domaine’s long-standing connection to the vineyards of Mercurey and its commitment to expressing the individuality of each terroir.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby-red colour. Its aromatic profile is marked by warm spices, dark berry fruit and attractive woody, roasted notes from its time in oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously textured, with concentrated fruit, savoury spice and well-integrated tannins balanced by the freshness typical of Burgundy. The 2020 vintage can be enjoyed now after a little aeration, but should develop further complexity over the next several years.
Production
The domaine is based in Jambles, in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, with vineyards in Jambles, Givry and Mercurey. The grapes are cultivated using sustainable practices designed to preserve the character of the individual plots and promote high-quality fruit. The wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 40% of which are new, contributing its distinctive roasted and woody nuances while allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the centre.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for game, the wine also works beautifully with rich stews, braised beef, roast poultry and earthy mushroom dishes. Serve lightly cool, around 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and open up its spicy aromatics.
Producer
Domaine Danjean-Berthoux has its roots in a family estate established by Georges Berthoux, who took over from his father, Charles Berthoux, in 1958 and gradually built vineyards across Jambles, Givry and Mercurey. Pascal Danjean joined the domaine in 1993 and took full responsibility in 2002; today, he works alongside his son Charles-Antoine, representing the third and fourth generations. The domaine is recognised for its sustainable vineyard management and its focus on conveying the distinctive character of the Côte Chalonnaise’s terroirs.
