Description
Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets 2017 is a classic expression of Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s most characterful premier cru sites. This is a wine that marries the village’s trademark structure with a surprising finesse and aromatic lift, especially in the graceful 2017 vintage. Crafted in a resolutely traditional style, it offers a vivid snapshot of old-vine Pommard at its most refined and ageworthy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Les Arvelets shows a deep, shimmering ruby colour with garnet hues at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youthful freshness. The nose is complex and slowly unfurls with air: red and black cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry compote layered with violets, dried rose petals, and subtle notes of forest floor. As it opens further, savoury tones of sous-bois, clove, cocoa nib and a touch of smoky minerality emerge, reflecting both terroir and traditional élevage.
On the palate, this Pommard 1er Cru is medium to full-bodied, combining ripe, pure Pinot fruit with a firm yet finely woven tannic frame. Flavours of cherry, red plum and blackcurrant are supported by bright acidity and a mineral core, giving the wine both depth and precision. The whole-cluster vinification contributes gentle spice, fine-grained tannins and a long, savoury finish. While already approachable with some aeration, the 2017 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–15 years from vintage, gaining more tertiary notes of truffle, game and leather over time.
Production
Les Arvelets is a premier cru climat in Pommard, set on well-drained, limestone-rich clay soils that naturally limit yields and give wines of both intensity and mineral finesse. Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is known for working with old vines, many on original rootstock, which deliver low yields of concentrated, small berries. Harvest is carried out by hand with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. The domaine favours traditional Burgundian methods, typically fermenting with a high proportion of whole clusters using indigenous yeasts, followed by a long cuvaison to gently extract colour, flavour and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) for an extended period, allowing it to clarify naturally and develop complexity before bottling without aggressive filtration.
Food & Serving
This Pommard 1er Cru is a superb partner for richly flavoured dishes such as roast duck with cherries, lamb loin with herbs, wild mushroom risotto, game birds, or veal in a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with earthy cheeses like Reblochon, Comté or a mature Tomme. Serve at 15–17°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted more gently and briefly, mainly to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is a highly respected, family-run estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with roots going back several generations in Burgundy. The Confuron family has long been associated with meticulous vineyard work and the preservation of old vines, and today the domaine is recognized for its traditional, terroir-driven reds from some of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune’s most prized appellations, including Pommard. Eschewing excessive extraction and heavy new oak, they focus instead on ripe, healthy fruit, whole-cluster fermentations and minimal intervention to let each climat speak clearly. Their wines are sought after by Burgundy enthusiasts for their authenticity, ageworthiness and ability to express the nuanced character of each vineyard site.
