Description
Comte de Vogüé Musigny 2002 Magnum is one of Burgundy’s great collector wines, coming from a historic domaine that has long been synonymous with Musigny’s finest expression. In magnum, the 2002 vintage offers extra depth and a slower, more graceful evolution, making it especially attractive for long cellaring or a truly memorable celebration. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s deep roots in Chambolle-Musigny and its stewardship of a major share of Le Musigny add rare prestige to every bottle.
Tasting Notes
The 2002 Musigny typically shows a luminous ruby-garnet color with impressive clarity for its age. On the nose, it opens with red cherries, candied raspberries, sweet spice, flowers, and a subtle touch of oak, gradually broadening into darker fruit, rose petal, and earthy nuances.
The palate is refined and poised rather than forceful, with silky tannins, concentrated red and black fruit, and a very elegant, feminine structure. It is a wine of precision and perfume, finishing long and layered, with enough balance and extract to continue ageing beautifully in magnum for many years.
Production
Produced from Pinot Noir in the heart of Bourgogne, this wine comes from the legendary Musigny vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny, a site known for its limestone-rich soils and exceptional exposition. The domaine’s holdings in Musigny are among the most important in the appellation, and the grapes are typically harvested by hand to preserve fruit integrity and select the best bunches.
Vinification is carried out with a focus on finesse and terroir expression, allowing the wine to reflect Musigny’s aromatic complexity, mineral drive, and silken texture. The magnum format further supports slow maturation, helping the wine retain freshness and structure over time.
Food & Serving
This is a classic match for refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, veal tenderloin, game birds, wild mushroom risotto, or truffle-accented cuisine. It is best served at around 16-18°C, and decanting is recommended if the bottle is being opened now, ideally for 1-2 hours to allow the aromatics to unfold gently.
Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the most historic names in Burgundy, founded in 1450 and still rooted in the same family after more than 20 generations. The domaine is especially revered for its holdings in Musigny, where it is the largest owner, and it has long been considered a benchmark for Chambolle-Musigny and the Côte de Nuits as a whole. Under the modern leadership of Claire and Marie de Vogüé, supported by a highly regarded vineyard and cellar team, the estate has earned renewed acclaim and remains among Burgundy’s top producers.
