Description
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru 2021 is one of Burgundy’s most coveted red wines, sourced from the heart of the legendary Musigny vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny. This vintage marries sensual finesse with impressive depth, capturing the ethereal side of Pinot Noir while retaining serious structure and aging potential. Crafted in tiny quantities from some of the appellation’s oldest vines, it stands as a benchmark expression of Grand Cru Burgundy in a cooler, finely etched vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes shows a vibrant, translucent ruby hue with a luminous rim, signaling both elegance and concentration. The nose is hauntingly perfumed, opening with sweet red berries and ripe cherries intertwined with rose petals, blood orange zest, musk and a delicate thread of exotic spice. Subtler notes of crushed herbs, fine earth, and a hint of graphite emerge with air, adding layers of complexity.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet weightless, with a silk-satin texture that glides effortlessly. The core of pure red fruit—wild strawberry, red cherry, and pomegranate—is framed by lively, mouthwatering acidity and very fine, sweet, pliant tannins. The finish is long, precise, and perfumed, echoing florals and citrusy lift rather than sheer power. While already disarmingly sensual in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest significant aging potential: ideally drink from 2030 and over the following 20+ years, as the wine gains complexity, savor and tertiary nuance.
Production
The Musigny Grand Cru vineyard sits on a privileged slope above Chambolle-Musigny, where thin, limestone-rich soils overlay fractured rock, giving naturally low yields and a striking mineral backbone. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé farms its old vines—many exceeding 40–60 years of age—with great attention to detail, using careful vineyard work and strict green harvesting to preserve balance and purity in a challenging, cool 2021 season. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only the finest fruit. Vinification traditionally centers on gentle extraction to emphasize fragrance over weight: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with a measured use of punching down and pumping over. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion new, but never overwhelming) to refine tannins and build texture, always with the goal of preserving the hallmark elegance and aromatic definition of Musigny.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru’s delicacy and complexity call for refined, subtly flavored dishes: think roast pigeon or duck breast with cherries, veal tenderloin with morels, or lamb saddle with thyme and jus. It excels with game birds, truffled poultry, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or root vegetables, as well as aged but not overly powerful cheeses like Comté or a delicate Brie de Meaux. Serve at 16–17°C (about 60–63°F) to highlight its aromatics and silkiness; in its youth, a gentle decanting of 45–60 minutes helps the bouquet unfurl, while older bottles should be handled more delicately, with a brief, careful decant just to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of Burgundy’s most historic and revered estates, with roots in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to the 15th century. The domaine is the dominant owner in Musigny Grand Cru and is widely seen as its foremost interpreter, crafting wines that define the appellation’s combination of power and grace. Over generations, the estate has maintained an unwavering commitment to meticulous vineyard work and a classic, terroir-driven style, which has earned it a place among the top domaines in all of Burgundy. Under the new stewardship of director Jean Lupatelli, the domaine continues to refine its approach, and the 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes marks a notably strong and confident start for this new chapter, reinforcing de Vogüé’s status as a reference-point producer for collectors and Burgundy lovers worldwide.
