Description
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny 2017 is a benchmark Grand Cru red Burgundy, capturing the haunting elegance and depth that have made this vineyard legendary. Sourced from the estate’s venerable old vines (“Vieilles Vignes”) in Musigny, it offers a rare combination of power, precision, and finesse. This is one of the domaine’s flagship wines and a reference point for Pinot Noir in Burgundy, particularly prized by collectors and serious enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, shimmering ruby hue with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose unfolds gradually, revealing layers of ripe cherry and wild strawberry woven with rose petals, warm spices, orange zest, and a subtle, creamy touch of new oak. As it opens, more floral and mineral nuances emerge, giving the bouquet remarkable complexity and lift.
On the palate, this Grand Cru is full-bodied yet exquisitely refined, with a velvety texture that glides across the mouth. Concentrated red fruit is supported by vibrant acidity and fine, chalky tannins, creating both depth and energy. The flavors echo the nose—cherries, exotic spice, citrus peel, and a gentle, polished oak integration—leading into a remarkably long, resonant finish that lingers with floral and mineral notes. While already impressive in its youth, the 2017 Musigny has substantial aging potential and will continue to gain complexity and harmony over 15–25 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
This Musigny Grand Cru is crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, sourced from some of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s oldest vines in the fabled Musigny vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. The terroir here is classic Musigny: a high, well-exposed slope with thin, limestone-rich soils over marl that yield wines of both power and extraordinary finesse. Harvesting is done by hand with meticulous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit reaches the winery. Vinification typically involves traditional Burgundian methods—careful destemming (often with a portion of whole clusters depending on the vintage), a cool pre-fermentation maceration, followed by fermentation in open vats with gentle extraction to preserve elegance. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a significant but judicious proportion of new oak, allowing the structure and complexity of the Grand Cru fruit to integrate slowly while maintaining purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best matched with refined, delicately prepared dishes that allow its subtleties to shine. Think roasted duck breast with cherries, pigeon or squab, veal tenderloin with morels, or simply a truffled roast chicken. It can also be superb with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, refined game birds, or aged but not overpowering cheeses such as Comté or Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy stems to let the aromatics fully express themselves. For younger bottles, decanting 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to help the wine open up; older, more mature bottles should be handled gently, with only a brief, careful decant to remove sediment if needed.
Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of Burgundy’s most revered and historic estates, with roots in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to the 15th century. Long recognized as the leading proprietor of the Musigny Grand Cru, the domaine farms the lion’s share of this hallowed vineyard and has built its reputation on expressing the singular elegance and depth of Chambolle’s finest terroirs. Over generations, de Vogüé has been a standard-bearer for traditional yet exacting winemaking, focusing on old vines, low yields, and meticulous vineyard work. Its Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, and Chambolle-Musigny bottlings are among the most sought-after wines in the region, consistently earning acclaim from critics and collectors and helping define the modern image of top-tier red Burgundy.
