Description
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 2020 is one of Burgundy’s most coveted expressions of Premier Cru Pinot Noir, marrying sensuality with striking precision. From one of Chambolle’s most fabled sites, this wine offers a deeply perfumed, finely etched profile that captures the essence of ‘Les Amoureuses’—often spoken of in the same breath as Grand Cru. The 2020 vintage adds an extra layer of intensity and purity, further cementing its reputation as a collector’s treasure with a long life ahead.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Les Amoureuses is a vivid, shimmering ruby with youthful purple hues at the rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is wonderfully expressive and aromatic, with a lifted bouquet of black cherries and ripe raspberries, laced with bergamot zest, delicate florals, and a subtle hint of moist forest floor and underbrush. There’s a sense of perfume and finesse that feels very true to Chambolle, yet with the drive and precision that marks the vintage.
The palate is soft and plush on entry, quickly revealing silky, supple tannins that glide rather than grip. Layers of blueberry and black cherry fruit unfold alongside notes of blood orange, fine spice, and a faint mineral edge, giving the wine both sensuality and structure. While it may not yet show the full breadth and layered complexity of the very greatest Les Amoureuses, it is remarkably pure, poised, and seductive. This 2020 has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for 20–25 years, during which its texture should grow even more satin-like and its aromatics more nuanced and complex.
Production
Les Amoureuses is a celebrated Premier Cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny, resting on finely fractured limestone and thin, stony topsoils that naturally limit yields and give the wines their hallmark finesse and mineral clarity. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé practices meticulous, manual vineyard work, with careful canopy management and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Pinot Noir clusters make it to the cellar. In the winery, the fruit is sorted rigorously, then typically undergoes gentle fermentation in vats—often with a proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage—to enhance aromatic lift and texture. Extraction is kept delicate to preserve elegance rather than power, and élevage takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to frame, rather than dominate, the wine’s refined, terroir-driven character.
Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 2020 shines alongside refined, delicately flavored dishes that complement its elegance rather than overpower it. Consider pairing it with roast pigeon or duck breast, veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms, truffle-infused poultry, or simply prepared lamb cutlets. Earthy accompaniments like mushroom fricassée, root vegetables, and creamy polenta work beautifully, as do aged but not overly pungent cheeses such as Comté, Tomme or aged goat cheese. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth can help the wine unfurl its bouquet and refine the tannins; in more mature bottles, a gentle, shorter decant just before serving is advisable to separate any sediment and let the wine open up.
