Description

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s Bonnes-Mares 2022 in magnum is a commanding expression of one of Burgundy’s great Grand Cru vineyards, captured in an ideal, long-lived format. This bottling marries the vineyard’s natural power with the estate’s signature finesse, offering depth, structure and detail that will reward patient cellaring. In magnum, the 2022 Bonnes-Mares shows even greater aging potential, making it a superb choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Bonnes-Mares is deep ruby with youthful purple hues, hinting at its concentration and energy. The nose is layered and expressive: dark cherry, black raspberry and plum mingle with wild strawberry, rose petals, violets, and a subtle forest-floor note. Undertones of warm spice, finely ground pepper, and a touch of graphite and cocoa emerge with air, giving a complex, savoury counterpoint to the pure fruit. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, precise and intense, with a core of ripe yet vibrant red and dark berry fruit wrapped in a firm but refined tannic frame. The texture is chalky and powdery rather than rustic, with a saline, mineral drive that carries the flavours through to a long, mouthwatering finish. The 2022 vintage brings generosity and early charm, but the structure, especially in magnum, clearly points to significant aging potential. Well-stored magnums should evolve gracefully over 20–30 years, gaining tertiary complexity—truffle, game, sous-bois—while retaining their inner freshness.

Production
Bonnes-Mares is a Grand Cru that straddles Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, and de Vogüé is its historic benchmark holder, farming some of the choicest parcels. The vineyard’s mosaic of soils—ranging from heavier red clay to whiter, chalk-rich marls—gives the wine both power and finesse: darker fruit and structure from the deeper soils, lifted aromatics and minerality from the stonier sectors. The domaine works its old Pinot Noir vines with great care, focusing on low yields and meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Harvest is carried out by hand at optimal ripeness, preserving healthy, concentrated fruit. Vinification typically combines a careful proportion of whole clusters (depending on vintage conditions) with gentle extraction, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the terroir expression. The magnums are bottled with particular attention to closure and élevage length to maximize longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine built for the table, best matched with refined but flavourful dishes that can complement its depth and structure: roast duck or pigeon, venison loin, lamb saddle with herbs, or veal with morels are all classic partners. Earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, black truffle, root vegetables, or a simple jus—highlight the wine’s evolving savoury nuances. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to preserve tension and aromatic detail. In its youth, especially from magnum, give it a good 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the fruit, spice, and floral notes to unfurl; with age, decant gently for sediment and shorter periods to avoid diminishing its more delicate tertiary aromas.

Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the most revered names in Chambolle-Musigny and a cornerstone of Burgundy’s fine wine history. With roots tracing back to the 15th century, the estate has long been guardian of some of the region’s most prized vineyards, including substantial holdings in Bonnes-Mares and the lion’s share of Musigny. Known for combining rigorous vineyard work with a classical, terroir-driven approach in the cellar, de Vogüé has consistently produced wines that define the character of Chambolle and its Grand Crus: perfumed, structured, and profoundly ageworthy. Its bottlings are fixtures on the world’s most serious Burgundy lists and regularly earn top critical acclaim, cementing the domaine’s status as a benchmark producer in the Côte de Nuits.
