Description

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 2014 is a benchmark Grand Cru red Burgundy from one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most revered domaines. Sourced from the legendary Bonnes Mares vineyard, this cuvée marries power and structure with the domaine’s signature finesse. The 2014 vintage offers classical balance, clarity of fruit and a refined mineral backbone that promises graceful evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Bonnes Mares shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with garnet highlights beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose is detailed and layered, opening with dark cherry, wild strawberry and blackberry, followed by violet, peony and rose petal. Underneath the fruit, subtle notes of forest floor, crushed stone, graphite, fine spice and a hint of cocoa reflect its Grand Cru pedigree and complex terroir. On the palate, this is a structured yet precise Bonnes Mares, medium to full-bodied with a firm but ultra-fine tannic frame. Dark red and black fruits—morello cherry, blackcurrant and ripe raspberry—interplay with savoury nuances of earth, tea leaf, dried herbs and a distinctive chalky-mineral grip. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving lift and definition, while the finish is long, persistent and saline. Still youthful, the 2014 has many years ahead: it can be approached now with a proper decant, but will reward patient cellaring for 10–20 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silky texture.

Production
Bonnes Mares straddles the border between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, and de Vogüé’s parcels sit on a mix of limestone-rich, stony soils and heavier clay, giving a rare combination of tension and depth. The domaine practices meticulous vineyard work with low yields, careful canopy management and hand-harvesting, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy Pinot Noir clusters are brought to the cuverie. The 2014 fruit was sorted rigorously before a traditional Burgundian vinification: gentle extraction to preserve finesse, fermentation in vats with native yeasts, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) to refine texture and integrate tannins without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of terroir.

Food & Serving
This Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is best matched with refined, flavourful dishes such as roasted duck with cherries, pigeon, venison or lamb with herbs, as well as mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto or aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in large Burgundy stems to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth or current mid-stage of evolution, both to soften the structure and to fully reveal the wine’s floral, mineral and spicy nuances.

Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the historic and most esteemed estates in Burgundy, with roots in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to the 15th century. The domaine is synonymous with Grand Cru excellence, particularly through its holdings in Musigny and Bonnes Mares, which are considered among the crown jewels of the Côte de Nuits. Under the stewardship of successive generations and a highly skilled team, de Vogüé has become a reference point for wines that seamlessly combine intensity and longevity with delicacy and perfume. Their meticulous vineyard work, traditional yet precise winemaking and unwavering commitment to terroir expression have secured the domaine’s status as a benchmark producer not only in Chambolle-Musigny, but in all of Burgundy.
