Description
Domaine Comte Armand’s Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 2021 is the flagship wine from one of Burgundy’s most historic monopole vineyards. This 1er Cru bottling captures the elegance and tension of the cooler 2021 vintage, trading power for precision and aromatic complexity. Long regarded as one of Pommard’s benchmark wines, it offers a refined, ageworthy expression of Pinot Noir that will reward patience in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos des Epeneaux shows a vibrant, translucent ruby hue, hinting at its finesse-driven style. The nose opens with an intense perfume of black cherries and vivid raspberry coulis, layered with notes of white pepper, bay leaf, and subtle floral tones, all underscored by a delicate, saline minerality that emerges with air.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied and precise rather than opulent, with juicy red and dark berry fruit framed by fine, firm tannins. There is a lovely interplay between ripeness and freshness, giving the wine a taut, mouthwatering profile. The finish is long and linear, if a touch less broad than riper vintages, emphasizing purity over weight. While already aromatic and expressive, this wine is built for aging; it will benefit from 5–6 years in the cellar and should evolve gracefully for at least 12–15 years from the vintage.
Production
Clos des Epeneaux is a walled, monopole vineyard in Pommard, classified as Premier Cru and famed for its deep clay-limestone soils that naturally produce structured, long-lived Pinot Noir. Domaine Comte Armand farms the clos with great care, using sustainable, largely organic and biodynamic-leaning practices to preserve the health of the old vines and the personality of the terroir. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict sorting to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit—especially crucial in a delicate year like 2021. Vinification typically involves a careful balance of whole-cluster inclusion (depending on the vintage), native yeast fermentations in temperature-controlled vats, and gentle extraction to emphasize finesse over sheer power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a thoughtful proportion of new oak) for around 18 months, allowing the tannins to integrate and the complex aromatics to unfold before bottling with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This refined Pommard pairs beautifully with dishes that match its depth and structure without overwhelming its elegance. Think roast duck breast with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, coq au vin, wild mushroom risotto, or poultry in truffle jus; it also shines alongside aged Comté or mild, earthy cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F). In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant to remove sediment and let the aromatics blossom will be sufficient.
