Description
Domaine Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of the most revered monopoles in Pommard. Sourced entirely from the walled Clos des Epeneaux, this 1er Cru combines depth, structure and precision in a vintage noted for its concentration and freshness. In 2020, reduced yields meant the wine was blended from just two cuvées instead of the usual four, further sharpening its focus and intensity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Clos des Epeneaux shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with a youthful, almost luminous intensity. The nose opens slowly but confidently with layers of black cherry and ripe raspberry, lifted by notes of menthol and blood orange zest. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of violet, subtle forest floor, and a fine dusting of warm spice.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet powerful, with finely grained tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Dark cherry and red berry flavors are intertwined with allspice, a touch of bitter cocoa and a distinctive tang of tart quince. The acidity is bright and energetic, giving the wine a taut, linear feel and excellent definition. The finish is long, poised and quietly persistent, suggesting a wine built to evolve gracefully over time. This 2020 Clos des Epeneaux has significant aging potential; expect it to start showing real charm from 2026 onward and to develop further complexity over 15–20 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Clos des Epeneaux is one of Pommard’s most historic and coveted enclosed vineyards, a monopole of Domaine Comte Armand located on the northern side of the village. The terroir combines clay-limestone soils with good drainage and a notable proportion of iron-rich marl, giving the wines their characteristic structure and depth. The domaine farms the vineyard organically and biodynamically, with meticulous attention to vine health and yields kept naturally low. Harvest is done by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe Pinot Noir berries are used. Vinification typically involves a mix of destemmed and whole bunches, gentle extraction and a slow fermentation to preserve aromatic purity and fine tannin texture. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) to integrate the structure and add subtle complexity, without overwhelming the expression of the Clos.
Food & Serving
This Pommard 1er Cru is an excellent partner for refined yet flavorful dishes such as roast duck with cherries, veal tenderloin, slow-braised beef cheeks, or herb-crusted lamb. It also works beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry, wild mushrooms, and hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful service directly from the bottle will suffice.
Producer
Domaine Comte Armand is one of the great historic estates of Pommard, with roots in Burgundy going back to the 19th century. The family acquired Clos des Epeneaux in 1826, and it has remained the beating heart of the domaine ever since, making Comte Armand synonymous with this famous monopole. Today, the domaine is widely recognized as a reference point for structured yet refined Pommard, combining traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with thoughtful, sustainable viticulture. Over the decades, under the guidance of a succession of highly regarded vignerons, Domaine Comte Armand has garnered a reputation for long-lived, terroir-driven wines that are among the most sought-after in the Côte de Beaune, with Clos des Epeneaux standing as its flagship and a benchmark for the appellation.
