Description
Domaine Clos Frantin Echezeaux Grand Cru 2019 is a refined expression of one of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards, shaped by Pinot Noir and the precision of Albert Bichot. Sourced from the small lieu-dit Les Champs Traversins, it combines natural elegance with the depth and complexity expected from Echézeaux. This is a wine that speaks clearly of its terroir while offering the pedigree and age-worthiness collectors look for.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a graceful, polished profile with bright red berry fruit at the core and an attractive sense of finesse. The bouquet opens with raspberry, wild strawberry, and summer-fruit aromas, layered with spice, loamy earth, and subtle floral notes, while the palate is round and beautifully balanced with fine tannins, crisp acidity, and discreet oak. The finish is exceptionally long, ending with a faint touch of dark chocolate and spice. This wine has excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over 15 to 20 years, or even longer in a strong cellar.
Production
The wine comes from a small parcel in Les Champs Traversins, where sandy and gravelly soils, a steep slope, and proximity to the Orveau valley create ideal conditions for producing a Pinot Noir of remarkable elegance. Domaine du Clos-Frantin works organically, replacing herbicides and artificial fertilisers with compost and ploughing, while strict pruning keeps yields low and fruit concentration high. Vinification is carried out with minimal intervention, and the wine is transferred by gravity before maturing in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, with carefully selected oak from sources such as Tronçais and Allier used to add subtle complexity without overwhelming the wine.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru pairs wonderfully with refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, game birds, veal medallions, or mushroom-based dishes, as well as truffled preparations and aged hard cheeses. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 16–18°C, to best show its aromatic detail and structure. Decanting for about 30 to 60 minutes is recommended when young, especially to allow the bouquet to open fully.
Producer
Albert Bichot is one of Burgundy’s most respected family-owned producers, established in 1831 and now led by the sixth generation, Albéric Bichot. The house owns six exceptional domaines across Burgundy and Beaujolais, with more than 100 hectares of vineyards, including prized holdings in some of the region’s most sought-after appellations. Domaine du Clos-Frantin, based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, is known for its organically farmed Premier and Grand Cru vineyards and for a winemaking philosophy that aims to let each terroir speak with clarity and authenticity.
