Description
Domaine Clos Frantin Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018 is a refined expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most revered Grand Cru vineyards. Sourced from the small parcel in Les Champs Traversins, it combines the elegance of Echézeaux with the depth and precision that Albert Bichot’s Clos-Frantin domaine is known for.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2018 Echézeaux shows the poise and concentration expected of a top Grand Cru, with aromas of red berries, summer fruits, and a subtle spice lift. Vinous notes suggest a bolder profile as well, with blackberry and raspberry framed by hints of tar and tobacco.
On the palate it is round, harmonious, and beautifully structured, with finely integrated oak and silky tannins. The finish is exceptionally long, marked by a faint touch of dark chocolate, and the wine has the depth to age gracefully for many years, gaining further nuance and complexity over time.
Production
The wine comes from a tiny single parcel in Les Champs Traversins, where sandy, gravelly soils, a steep slope, and proximity to the Orveau valley create a terroir that naturally favors elegance and finesse. Domaine du Clos-Frantin works organically, replacing herbicides and artificial fertilizers with compost and ploughing, while strict pruning keeps yields low and fruit quality high. Vinification is handled with minimal intervention, and the wine is then transferred by gravity to cellar for 12 to 18 months of barrel aging in French oak, using casks from different forests and toast levels to add subtle complexity without masking the terroir.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is an excellent match for refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, veal tenderloin, game birds, or mushroom-based preparations. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes and hard, aged cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C and consider decanting for 1-2 hours to let the wine fully open and reveal its layered ароматics and texture.
Producer
Albert Bichot is one of Burgundy’s most respected producers, with family roots dating back to 1831 and leadership in the hands of the sixth generation, Albéric Bichot, since 1996. The house owns six exceptional domaines across Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Beaujolais, covering more than 100 hectares in total. Domaine du Clos-Frantin, located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, is particularly notable for its organically certified vineyards and its focus on allowing each wine to express the character of its village and terroir with as little interference as possible.
