Description

Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019 MG is a Grenache-led red from the Rhône with raspberry, rose, lavender and pepper in a magnum bottle. This is Charvin in a large format, scented and serious from the first pour. Concrete ageing keeps the profile on fruit, stems, garrigue and spice. Open it for lamb, game or a long table of charcuterie.

About the Wine
Charvin farms organically certified vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape on galets roulés, sand and clay. The 2019 Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape MG comes from that ground and carries the estate's Rhône blend. Grenache leads here, with Syrah plus Mourvèdre plus Vaccarèse plus Counoise behind it. The minor varieties are easy to notice in this bottle, as Vaccarèse and Counoise bring peppery lift and a faint herbal snap. Those details give the wine a Charvin fingerprint beyond simple southern Rhône ripeness. The magnum format suits the density of the 2019 fruit, which feels sunlit, red-toned and firmly built from the vineyard. In the cellar, Charvin gives this wine 21 months in concrete tanks. The estate's Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made in a firmly traditional register, with whole bunch character woven into the perfume. Concrete ageing puts the focus on raspberry skin, dried rose, lavender and black pepper. The stems add a twiggy spice that sits next to the floral notes and links neatly with the listed dry profile. The final texture has the feel of a carefully drawn infusion, with warm stone and crushed strawberry skin lingering at the edge.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, this 2019 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens with rose petal, blood orange and ripe forest strawberry before raspberry compote takes over. The palate is medium to full bodied and sunny, with red fruit running into blackberry skin, garrigue and a little mint. Black pepper, lavender and incense build through the middle, giving the wine a Provençal scent that feels unmistakably Charvin in its concrete raised style. The tannins grip in a fine line across the cheeks and the acidity stays fresh enough to carry the 15 percent alcohol through a long finish of raspberry seed and dry herbs. Drink from 2025 to 2039.

Food Pairing
Roast lamb shoulder with rosemary is an easy first call for this magnum, especially if the meat has crisp edges and plenty of pan juices. For a regional suggestion, choose daube Provençale with orange peel, black olives and slow cooked beef from a heavy pot. The wine's rose and lavender notes pick up the herbal side of that dish and its peppery finish has enough grip for the sauce. Game also makes sense here, so try venison loin with juniper or pheasant with mushrooms and thyme. Start the meal with saucisson, pâté de campagne and aged Saint-Marcellin before the bottle moves into its darker fruit and incense register.

Producer
Domaine Charvin has a strikingly single-minded way of presenting Châteauneuf-du-Pape: the domaine bottles one main red from the appellation, and this 2019 MG carries that all-in approach in a large bottle built for slow evolution over dinner and over decades in the cellar. Laurent Charvin took charge of a family property with roots in the nineteenth century and shaped a cellar signature around concrete tanks, whole bunch fermentation and long élevage, and the estate's fragrant Grenache core sits at the center of that signature. In the 2019, the perfume feels lifted before the palate turns broad, with rose and raspberry leaf rising ahead of peppercorn and darker Châteauneuf weight across a palate that stays finely drawn. The estate also farms and bottles Côtes du Rhône from surrounding holdings, so this Châteauneuf sits inside a wider family picture with the same quiet label language and the same patience in tank. Charvin's use of concrete is the producer trait to remember here, and the 2019 carries dry herbs plus clear red fruit plus a cool mineral feel from that élevage on a frame that remains distinctly Rhône. In this magnum, that trait reads as rose petal plus blood orange peel plus warm raspberry and a dry snap of garrigue at the finish after a few turns in a large glass.
