Description

Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2018 is a Grenache-led Rhône red with raspberry, cherry and smoky spice from organic vines on sandy clay. It has the house’s old-foudre calm and a lifted lavender note. The 2018 vintage feels ripe, dry and quietly commanding.

About the Wine
The 2018 Domaine Charvin Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from organically certified vineyards in the southern Rhône. Grenache leads the blend, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding darker fruit and savoury depth. The soils combine sandy clay with galets roulés, the rounded stones that sit across many of Charvin’s Châteauneuf parcels. In this wine, those sites read as warm red fruit, a dusty herbal edge and a smoky tone that sits behind the cherry. In the cellar, Domaine Charvin keeps this Châteauneuf-du-Pape in large old oak foudres for around 18 months. The oak leaves a quiet mark, seen more in texture and spice than in sweetness or toast. The 2018 is dry and reaches 15% alcohol, yet the fruit stays detailed, with raspberry and cherry rather than jam alone. The blend carries lavender, baking spice and a bitter chocolate note as it opens in the glass. A fine smoky thread stays on the rim after a swirl.

Tasting Notes
Dark red in the glass, this 2018 Domaine Charvin opens with raspberry, black cherry, lavender and a touch of garrigue that feels very much like Charvin rather than a broad Châteauneuf sketch. The palate is dry and full, with Grenache giving sweet red fruit, Syrah adding darker berry tones and Mourvèdre bringing a faint gamey shadow. Large old foudre ageing shows through as rounded tannin, baking spice and a smooth frame that carries the wine rather than dressing it up. The finish brings allspice, bitter chocolate, smoke and a clean grip that lingers after the cherry fades. Drink 2023-2035.

Food Pairing
This Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2018 wants food with browned edges, herbs and real savoury depth. Roast leg of lamb with rosemary, garlic and pan juices is a strong match, especially when the meat keeps a little pink at the centre. For a regional choice, serve it with daube provençale, where slow-cooked beef, orange peel, olives and thyme echo the wine’s dark fruit and garrigue notes. Venison loin with juniper and a cherry sauce also fits the wine’s smoky spice and firm Grenache-led structure. Aged Comté or a nutty tomme brings out the bitter chocolate note on the finish.

Producer
Domaine Charvin is one of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape names most closely tied to whole-bunch red winemaking, and that choice gives its wines a recognisable stem spice and floral lift. Laurent Charvin runs the family domaine with a quiet cellar approach, using concrete vats for fermentation and large old foudres for ageing. The estate’s organic farming matters in this bottle, since the 2018 carries the dusty herbal scent of its sandy clay and galets roulés parcels with unusual clarity. Charvin’s Grenache-led blends often feel open in perfume before the tannins arrive, and this wine follows that pattern through raspberry, lavender and smoke. The domaine bottles Châteauneuf-du-Pape with a distinctly traditional feel, built around infusion-like fragrance, whole-cluster grip and old oak rather than a glossy barrel signature. In the glass, the producer’s stamp is the combination of ripe southern Rhône fruit and a cool, twiggy spice that keeps returning after each sip.
