Description

Domaine Charvin’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019 in magnum (1.5 L) is a classically styled southern Rhône red, built for both immediate charm and graceful evolution. Sourced from the cooler northern reaches of the appellation, it marries vibrant red fruit with the region’s hallmark wild herb complexity. The magnum format further enhances its aging potential, making this a superb choice for cellaring or for the table at special gatherings.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a strong carmine-garnet core with purple reflections and a broad, slightly ochre-tinged rim that hints at early development while retaining youthful vibrancy. The nose is inviting and lifted: freshly confit wild red berries, strawberries and red cherries intertwined with lavender, garrigue, candied violets and a distinct note of orange blossom. Subtle hints of cocoa and warm earth add depth beneath the bright aromatics. On the palate, this is juicy and fresh, with a generous, full-bodied core typical of Grenache-led Châteauneuf-du-Pape, yet framed by finesse rather than sheer power. Succulent red berries and raspberry liqueur notes are layered with floral spice, dried herbs and a discreet chocolatey nuance on the long finish. The tannins are ample, ripe and slightly woolly in youth, but already fine-grained enough to give structure without harshness. While approachable after a good decant, it will benefit from another 1–3 years in bottle to fully knit together and should evolve beautifully for 10–15 years from vintage, especially in magnum.

Production
The fruit for Domaine Charvin’s 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes primarily from the northern sectors of the appellation, notably Cabrières and Maucoil, where cooler exposures and well-drained, stony soils (galets roulés over clay-limestone and sandy pockets) yield wines of aromatic lift and finesse. The domaine typically works their vineyards with great respect for the environment, favoring manual work and hand-harvesting to ensure optimal fruit selection at the perfect point of ripeness. The blend is a traditional field blend led by approximately 82% Grenache, with 5% each of Mourvèdre and Syrah and 4% each of Counoise and Vaccarèse, capturing the full spectrum of Châteauneuf’s permitted varieties. Vinification is classic: whole or mostly whole clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts and then aged in neutral tanks rather than small new barrels, preserving purity of fruit, terroir transparency and a distinctive, aromatic style without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an excellent partner for hearty Mediterranean and rustic French dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, grilled lamb chops, duck confit, roast game birds, or a classic Provencal daube. It also works beautifully with rich vegetable dishes such as ratatouille, roasted root vegetables, or mushroom and herb tarts, and with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); the magnum format benefits from a bit more aeration, so decant 1–2 hours before serving in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the garrigue and floral notes to blossom. As it ages, a shorter decant of 30–45 minutes will be sufficient to awaken its more evolved, savory complexity.

Producer
Domaine Charvin is a respected, family-run estate based in the village of Orange, long regarded as one of the benchmarks for traditionally made Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Charvin family has been growing vines in the region since the 19th century, and today the domaine is known for its old-vine holdings in the cooler northern sector of the appellation and its steadfast commitment to classical methods. Eschewing new oak and focusing on whole-cluster fermentation and aging in concrete or neutral tanks, they craft wines prized for their aromatic intensity, balance and age-worthiness rather than sheer power. Over the years, Domaine Charvin has earned a loyal following among Rhône enthusiasts and consistent critical praise, cementing its reputation as one of the quiet stars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
