Description
Domaine Chandon de Briailles’ Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux 2023 is an elegant Burgundy Pinot Noir that combines bright red-fruit character with the subtle earthy complexity typical of the Côte de Beaune. Made by a historic family domaine established in 1834, it offers a refined expression of its limestone-and-clay terroir, with the finesse and balance for which the estate is known.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a vibrant ruby-red colour. Its bouquet is led by fresh cherries and raspberries, complemented by delicate earthy and savoury nuances. On the palate, it is juicy and graceful, with lively acidity, fine-grained tannins and a poised, refreshing finish. Its balance makes it approachable in its youth, while the structure and concentration should allow it to develop additional savoury complexity over approximately five to eight years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
Produced from Pinot Noir grown in the Aux Fournaux climat of Savigny-lès-Beaune, the wine reflects the domaine’s varied limestone- and clay-based soils. Domaine Chandon de Briailles farms its vineyards organically and biodynamically, with low yields and a strong focus on expressing individual site character. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and includes a proportion of whole clusters, followed by maturation in French oak barrels with limited new wood. This restrained approach supports structure and complexity while keeping the fruit and sense of place at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this Burgundy with roast or lightly braised poultry, veal, duck or refined dishes featuring mushrooms. It also works well with vegetarian preparations based on lentils, root vegetables or wild mushrooms. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C. Decanting is not essential when serving the wine young, although a brief 20–30 minute decant can help open its aromas; older bottles are best handled gently and decanted only if sediment is present.
Producer
Domaine Chandon de Briailles has been in the same family since 1834 and is based in Savigny-lès-Beaune in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. The estate owns approximately 13.7 hectares of vineyards and works parcels around Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune, where distinct terroirs are expressed through a range of finely detailed wines. Under Claude and François de Nicolay, the domaine has farmed fully biodynamically since 2005, combining traditional Burgundian methods, minimal intervention and careful élevage to produce wines noted for their finesse, authenticity and age-worthiness.
