Description
Domaine Besson’s Givry Les Grandes Vignes 2023 is an elegant red Burgundy from a historic family domaine in the Côte Chalonnaise. Combining ripe fruit, a delicate herbal nuance and a silky texture, it offers a graceful expression of Givry with impressive length and finesse. The Besson family has been cultivating vines in the appellation since 1938.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby in colour, the wine opens with an inviting, fruit-driven nose of red berries complemented by a subtle touch of fresh herbs. On the palate, it is smooth and silky, with an elegant structure, balanced freshness and a lingering, refined finish.
The wine is approachable in its youth, where its supple texture and vibrant fruit are particularly appealing. It should also develop additional savoury and earthy nuances over the short to medium term when carefully cellared.
Production
Domaine Besson farms around 10 hectares in and around Givry, allowing the character of individual terroirs to come through. This 2023 red is made from Burgundy’s classic red grape, Pinot Noir, although detailed information on harvesting methods and vinification is not provided. The domaine’s wines are produced under Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée standards, with an emphasis on expressing the personality of the site.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for food, this Givry is well suited to smoked ham, steak, veal and other light meats. Its supple texture also makes it a natural match for a selection of cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 14–16°C. Decanting is not essential for the young 2023 vintage, although 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help open the aromas before serving.
Producer
Domaine Besson is a family-run estate founded in 1938 and based in Givry, Burgundy. Guillemette and Xavier Besson have been making wine since 1989, while their son Henri-Vital joined the domaine in 2017. Today, the family produces AOC wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir across approximately 10 hectares. The estate is home to two listed historic monuments, including an 18th-century building featured on its labels, as well as a distinctive 17th-century cellar with beautiful vaulted ceilings.
