Description
Domaine Bessin-Tremblay’s Chablis 1er Cru Les Montmains 2022 is a precise, mineral-driven white Burgundy that captures the pure, stony soul of great Chablis. Crafted by Jean-Claude and Romain Bessin, this premier cru balances brightness and depth, offering both immediate pleasure and the structure to age gracefully. Sourced from the renowned Les Montmains climat on Chablis’ left bank, it showcases why this domaine is a quiet favorite among serious Chablis lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Les Montmains shows a pale lemon color with silvery highlights, hinting at its youth and tension. The nose is finely etched and focused: green apple, lemon zest, and white flowers are layered over classic Chablis signatures of wet stone, oyster shell, and a subtle chalky edge, with a whisper of white peach and fresh herbs as it opens.
On the palate, this premier cru is sleek, linear, and beautifully chiselled. Lively citrus and crunchy orchard fruit are carried by a vibrant spine of acidity, with saline, iodine, and flint notes building through the mid-palate. The texture is refined rather than opulent, finishing long, pure, and mouthwatering with a lingering impression of lemon, sea breeze, and chalk. Enjoyable now for its energy and precision, it should develop added complexity and a touch more weight over the next 5–8 years, rewarding cellaring into the early 2030s.
Production
Les Montmains is one of Chablis’ classic left-bank premier crus, rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone soils rich in fossilized marine shells that give the wine its hallmark salinity and stony cut. Domaine Bessin-Tremblay farms these vines with great care, focusing on low yields and meticulous vineyard work to preserve the purity of the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed and fermented with a focus on preserving freshness and terroir expression. Elevage typically combines stainless steel and neutral oak, avoiding overt wood influence while adding texture and complexity, resulting in a wine that is both incisive and finely layered.
Food & Serving
This Chablis 1er Cru is a natural partner for the sea: think freshly shucked oysters, scallop crudo, poached turbot, grilled sea bass, or classic moules marinières. It also shines with sushi and sashimi, goat’s cheese, simple roast chicken with herbs, and vegetable dishes featuring fennel, asparagus, or leeks. Serve chilled but not icy, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little ahead of serving, can help the wine unfurl its mineral and floral nuances.
Producer
Domaine Bessin-Tremblay, led by Jean-Claude and now joined by his son Romain, is regarded as one of the most meticulous and terroir-focused estates in Chablis. Based in the heart of the appellation, the domaine has built its reputation on crafting incisive, classically styled Chablis that faithfully reflect their individual climats, from village level to premier and grand cru. Known for careful vineyard work, restrained use of oak, and a strong commitment to expressing the region’s Kimmeridgian soils, Bessin-Tremblay has become a reference point for enthusiasts seeking authentic, mineral-driven Chablis with real aging potential.
