Description
Domaine Arcelain Pommard Les Noizons 2021 is a classic red Burgundy that channels the power and structure for which Pommard is renowned, while still remaining finely detailed and elegant. Coming from the village-level lieu-dit “Les Noizons,” perched high on the slope, this cuvée stands out within the domaine’s range as their most powerful village Pommard. The shallow, stony soils at the top of the hill give the wine a distinctive identity: concentrated, mineral, and firmly grounded in its terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pommard Les Noizons shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful purple highlights along the rim. The nose opens with dark red fruits—think black cherry, wild raspberry and redcurrant—layered with notes of violets, crushed stones, subtle spice and a hint of earth and dried herbs that are so typical of Pommard.
On the palate, this wine is structured and energetic, with a firm backbone of tannins wrapped around juicy red and black fruit. Flavors of cherry, black raspberry and cranberry are joined by notes of cocoa, forest floor and a gentle savory edge, leading into a persistent, mineral-inflected finish. The acidity is bright and refreshing, giving lift and precision to the wine’s natural power. While already enjoyable with proper aeration, this 2021 has the structure to develop beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softening its tannins with time in bottle.
Production
Les Noizons sits high on the slopes of Pommard, on shallow, well-drained, stony soils over limestone that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The exposure allows for optimal ripening of Pinot Noir while preserving fresh acidity and aromatic nuance. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, with only the healthiest bunches brought to the cellar. Vinification follows traditional Burgundian methods: gentle destemming, a cold maceration to extract color and aroma, followed by fermentation in tanks with regular punch-downs or pump-overs to manage extraction. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels—often with a discreet proportion of new oak—to refine the tannins and add subtle complexity without overshadowing the purity of fruit and the signature structure of Pommard.
Food & Serving
This Pommard Les Noizons is a natural match for richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Think roast duck or guinea fowl, lamb chops with herbs, braised beef or veal, game birds, and mushroom-based dishes such as wild mushroom fricassee or truffle risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to show the wine’s aromatic lift and textural finesse. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; as the wine ages, a gentle decant to remove sediment shortly before serving is sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Michel Arcelain is a traditional family estate rooted in the village of Pommard in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, where Pinot Noir has been cultivated for generations. The domaine is known for its classic, terroir-driven reds that highlight the nuances of each vineyard, from village sites like Les Noizons to more prestigious climats. Working on a human scale, the family’s approach in the vineyard and cellar is deliberately low-intervention, allowing the character of Pommard’s limestone-rich slopes to shine through. Their wines are appreciated by Burgundy enthusiasts for their authenticity, structure, and capacity to age gracefully, helping to uphold Pommard’s reputation as one of the great red wine villages of the Côte d’Or.
