Description
Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly Silex 2022 is one of the Loire Valley’s most sought-after expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, renowned for its precision, energy and almost sculpted minerality. Sourced from flint-rich (‘silex’) soils in Pouilly-Fumé, this wine captures an intense sense of place and shows why Dagueneau is considered a benchmark for the region. The 2022 vintage continues the estate’s legacy of powerful yet razor-sharp whites that age beautifully and reward patient cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Silex 2022 is pale straw with green highlights, youthful and brilliantly clear, hinting at its freshness and tension. The nose is strikingly pure and expressive: notes of gooseberry, lime zest and white grapefruit are layered with crunchy green apple, fresh-cut herbs, and a distinctive smoky flint and wet stone character that has become the hallmark of this cuvée.
On the palate, the wine is taut, vibrant and deeply textured, with a concentrated core of citrus and stone fruit—think Meyer lemon, ripe pear and white peach—wrapped in a racy spine of acidity. Layers of chalk, gunflint and saline minerality drive through to an exceptionally long, focused finish. Still very young, the 2022 has the structure and intensity to evolve gracefully for 8–15 years, gaining complexity, creaminess and more pronounced smoky and honeyed nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Blanc Fumé de Pouilly Silex come from some of the estate’s most prized parcels in Pouilly-Fumé, planted on flint-rich soils that accumulate heat and impart the wine’s signature smoky, mineral edge. Yields are kept deliberately low and the harvest is carried out by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit makes it to the press. In the cellar, Dagueneau follows a meticulous, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, fermentation with careful temperature control, and aging on fine lees—often in a mix of large oak vessels and barrels—build texture and depth without masking the vibrant purity of the fruit or the transparency of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for refined, mineral-driven dishes: think oysters, scallops, grilled langoustines, or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with goat’s cheese (especially Loire classics like Crottin de Chavignol), sushi and sashimi, or delicate vegetable dishes such as asparagus, fennel or lightly dressed spring salads. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to shine. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter or a large-bowled white wine glass to open up the layers of fruit and minerality.
Producer
Didier Dagueneau, based in the heart of the Loire’s Pouilly-Fumé appellation, built a cult following for his uncompromising approach to quality and his singular, terroir-focused wines. Though Didier himself tragically passed away in 2008, the estate is now run by his children, who have faithfully preserved and refined his vision. Dagueneau is widely credited with redefining what Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire can be—concentrated, profound, ageworthy and unmistakably linked to its specific soils. The Silex cuvée, in particular, has become an icon of the region and a reference point for collectors and sommeliers around the world.
