Description

De Vigili Teroldego Rotaliano Tonalite 2022 is a refined expression of one of Trentino’s most characterful native grapes, crafted in the heart of the Teroldego Rotaliano DOC. This red offers a vibrant combination of purity, freshness and depth, showcasing just how elegant Teroldego can be when handled with care. Tonalite stands out for its precision and mineral tension, making it an excellent choice for those looking to explore the more terroir-driven side of Northern Italian reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Tonalite presents a deep ruby colour with violet highlights at the rim, youthful and bright. The nose is vivid and pure, with aromas of wild blackberry, morello cherry and blackcurrant, layered with notes of fresh violets, graphite, crushed stone and a hint of spice and dried herbs. On the palate, this Teroldego is medium-bodied but intense, with juicy dark fruit at the core—think black cherry, plum and bramble—wrapped in fine, chalky tannins. There is a clear mineral line and refreshing acidity that keeps everything lifted and linear, giving the wine an almost alpine clarity. Subtle notes of licorice, cocoa and savoury spice emerge on the finish. While very approachable and enjoyable now for its energy and fruit, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and softer texture with a bit of bottle age.

Production
The grapes for Tonalite come from selected plots in the Rotaliano plain of Trentino, an alluvial fan shaped by the Noce River, with gravelly, sandy soils rich in stones and mineral deposits that give Teroldego its hallmark freshness and structure. The vines benefit from a combination of warm days, cool nights and the surrounding Dolomite influence, helping preserve aromatic intensity and acidity. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches are brought to the cellar. In the winery, De Vigili favours a gentle, minimalist approach: careful destemming, temperature-controlled fermentation to protect aromatics, and measured maceration to extract colour and fine tannins without heaviness. Maturation in a mix of inert vessels and, where used, larger neutral wood allows the grape’s pure fruit and the stony, mineral character of the terroir to remain front and centre.

Food & Serving
This Teroldego is a versatile food wine that shines alongside hearty yet refined dishes. Try it with grilled lamb chops, roasted pork with herbs, mushroom risotto, speck and other cured meats, or mature alpine cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with tomato-based pasta dishes and charcoal-grilled vegetables. For optimal enjoyment, serve at around 16–18°C. In its youth, giving the wine a brief 30–45 minute decant can help open up the aromatics and soften the tannins, though it will also show very well simply poured into good-sized Bordeaux or universal wine glasses.

Producer
De Vigili is a small, quality-focused producer based in the Trentino region of Northern Italy, in the heart of the Teroldego Rotaliano denomination. Working close to the Dolomites, the family has built its reputation on crafting wines that faithfully reflect the character of local varieties and the stony, well-drained soils of the Rotaliano plain. Over time, De Vigili has become known among enthusiasts for bottlings that balance precision, freshness and depth, offering some of the more terroir-driven interpretations of Teroldego. Their work contributes to the growing recognition of Trentino not only as a source of reliable everyday wines, but also as a region capable of producing distinct, ageworthy reds from its native grapes.
