Description
David Léclapart’s L’Astre is a distinctive Premier Cru Blanc de Noirs Champagne made entirely from Pinot Noir and finished Pas Dosé, with no dosage to mask the wine’s natural character. A grower Champagne from Trépail, it reflects Léclapart’s biodynamic approach and his reputation for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines with remarkable purity and energy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L’Astre shows a bright golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is focused and mineral, offering aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus zest, chalk and subtle floral notes, with a gentle savoury complexity developing in the glass. On the palate, it is dry, precise and vibrant, combining Pinot Noir’s breadth with refreshing acidity and a long, chalky finish. As a non-vintage Champagne, it is ready to enjoy now, while its structure and acidity should allow it to develop additional nutty and toasty nuances with careful cellaring.
Production
The wine comes from Premier Cru vineyards in Trépail, on the Montagne de Reims, where chalk-rich soils provide freshness and a distinctive mineral character. David Léclapart farms biodynamically, with an emphasis on healthy soils, low-intervention viticulture and careful manual harvesting. L’Astre is produced as a Blanc de Noirs from Pinot Noir and released Pas Dosé, meaning no sugar is added after disgorgement; this preserves the wine’s natural tension and allows the vineyard and vintage character to take centre stage.
Food & Serving
Its dry, energetic profile makes L’Astre an excellent partner for oysters, scallops, sashimi, grilled prawns and other delicate seafood. It also works beautifully with roast poultry, veal, lightly seasoned pork and mature soft cheeses. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, allowing it to warm slightly in the glass. Decanting is not essential, but a brief pour into a small carafe can help reveal its more savoury and mineral layers, particularly when served young.
Producer
David Léclapart is one of Champagne’s leading grower-producers, based in Trépail in the Montagne de Reims. His domaine is known for biodynamic farming, low-intervention winemaking and a small range of highly individual Champagnes that prioritise transparency, texture and freshness over dosage or heavy cellar influence. L’Astre is part of the producer’s celebrated single-variety cuvée range and exemplifies the modern grower-Champagne movement, in which the character of the estate and its vineyards takes precedence over large-scale blending.
