Description
Damilano Barolo Cerequio 2019 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of La Morra’s most celebrated crus, delivering the classic power and perfume that Nebbiolo lovers seek. Protected from cold winds and rooted in a complex mix of sand, silt and clay, this wine captures the elegance and depth that have made Cerequio a reference point in Barolo. It stands out for its combination of firm structure, fragrant aromatics and a long, age‑worthy finish that reflects generations of Piedmontese winemaking tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Damilano Barolo Cerequio 2019 shows a luminous garnet core with brick‑tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo from a fine Barolo cru. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe red cherry and wild strawberry unfold into violet, dried rose petals and a distinctive balsamic lift, intertwined with refined notes of vanilla, licorice and a subtle goudron (tar) nuance.
On the palate, this Barolo is robust yet finely detailed, with concentrated red fruit wrapped in firm, ripe tannins and vibrant acidity. The structure is powerful but polished, giving a sense of both muscle and grace. Flavors of cherry, raspberry and plum are joined by hints of spice, tobacco, and a mineral edge from the Cerequio soils, leading to a long, savory finish. Still youthful in 2019, it will develop greater complexity over the next decade and beyond; expect an optimal drinking window from around 2026 onward, with the potential to age gracefully for 15–20 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
The grapes for Barolo Cerequio 2019 come from the renowned Cerequio vineyard in La Morra, situated at over 320 meters above sea level and facing east, which ensures steady ripening while preserving acidity and aromatic finesse. The vineyard’s soils are a mix of sand, silt and clay, a combination that naturally yields wines of significant tannin, structure and depth. Nebbiolo grapes are typically hand‑harvested to ensure careful selection of only the best clusters. In the cellar, the must undergoes a traditional fermentation and extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aroma, followed by maturation in oak (often a mix of large casks and/or carefully chosen barrels) to refine the tannins and build complexity before bottling and further bottle age.
Food & Serving
Damilano Barolo Cerequio 2019 is an ideal partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, lamb shanks, game birds, and truffle‑infused risotto or pasta. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to open fully and the tannins to soften, especially if enjoyed before its peak maturity.
Producer
Damilano is one of Barolo’s historic family estates, with roots tracing back to the late 19th century when Giuseppe Borgogno began cultivating vineyards in the heart of Piedmont. Over generations, the Damilano family has become known for their meticulous work in some of the region’s finest crus, including Cerequio, Cannubi and Brunate, helping to showcase the unique personality of each site. Their commitment to careful vineyard management and a thoughtful balance of tradition and modern technique has earned them a strong reputation both in Italy and internationally, making Damilano a key reference point for classic, terroir‑driven Barolo.
