Description
A rare and highly sought-after Côte-Rôtie from a classic vintage, the 1991 La Landonne from Rostaing showcases Syrah at its most refined and soulful. Known for its depth, structure, and distinctive northern Rhône character, this is a wine that appeals equally to collectors and lovers of mature, terroir-driven reds.
Tasting Notes
With age, Côte-Rôtie La Landonne typically develops a garnet to brick-toned hue, offering an aromatic profile of black olive, smoked meat, leather, dried violets, and dark berries. On the palate, it is expected to be powerful yet composed, with fine-grained tannins, savory minerality, and layered notes of pepper, cured herbs, and truffle.
The 1991 vintage should now be in a mature phase, showing tertiary complexity and a silky, evolved texture rather than primary fruit intensity. While peak drinking may already be well underway, well-stored bottles can still deliver impressive nuance and length.
Production
La Landonne comes from one of the most respected sites in Côte-Rôtie, where steep granite and schist slopes, excellent drainage, and the region’s cool continental climate help Syrah achieve both ripeness and aromatic precision. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the extreme terrain, with careful selection essential to preserve quality.
Vinification in Côte-Rôtie generally emphasizes traditional methods and gentle extraction, often with extended maceration and aging in oak to build texture and complexity while respecting the vineyard’s distinctive character. The result is a wine shaped strongly by its terroir.
Food & Serving
This mature Syrah pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, venison, duck confit, beef short ribs, or dishes featuring mushrooms, olives, and herbs de Provence. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant gently if needed, ideally for a short period only, as older bottles may already be fragile and expressive.
Producer
René Rostaing is one of the most respected names in Côte-Rôtie, widely credited with helping elevate the appellation’s international reputation through thoughtful vineyard work and a deep respect for terroir. His wines are known for their precision, longevity, and balance, and La Landonne has long stood as one of the flagship vineyard expressions of the region.
