Description

Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 1996 from E. Guigal is a benchmark Northern Rhône red, combining the depth and perfume of Syrah with the refinement that has made Guigal one of the region’s most respected names. Sourced from one of Côte-Rôtie’s most celebrated sites, this vintage offers the elegance, structure, and longevity collectors look for in a mature Rhône wine.

Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep garnet color with some graceful evolution at the rim, reflecting its age. On the nose, expect lifted aromas of blackberries, black cherry, violets, smoked meat, pepper, leather, and subtle earthy notes, with the signature Côte-Rôtie silkiness emerging as it opens. On the palate, it is layered and balanced, with concentrated dark fruit, savory spice, mineral tension, and fine tannins that have likely softened beautifully over time. The finish is long and nuanced, with the kind of complexity that rewards slow tasting. In a strong vintage and well-stored bottle, it can still offer excellent drinking, though maturity has likely brought it into its prime window rather than long-term cellaring.

Production
Côte-Rôtie is one of the steepest and most prized terroirs in the Northern Rhône, where schist, mica, and gneiss soils help produce wines of intensity, perfume, and finesse. The vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure and a continental climate moderated by the Rhône River, while careful hand harvesting is essential on the dramatic slopes. Guigal’s vinification tradition emphasizes precision and structure, with élevage designed to preserve fruit purity and add complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roast lamb, venison, duck breast, beef fillet, or slow-cooked game dishes, as well as truffle-based preparations and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and if the bottle is showing sediment or feels tightly closed, decant gently for 30–60 minutes before serving.

Producer
E. Guigal is one of the great names of the Rhône Valley, founded by Etienne Guigal in 1946 in Ampuis, the heart of Côte-Rôtie. Under the leadership of the Guigal family, the estate has become famous for its meticulous vineyard work, long élevage, and some of the most acclaimed wines in the region, helping elevate the global reputation of Northern Rhône Syrah.
