Description
Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé 2009 is a powerful, opulent expression from one of Bordeaux’s most admired Second Growth châteaux. From the outstanding 2009 vintage, this wine captures the richness and plush texture that have made the year legendary among collectors. Combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, it marries Saint-Estèphe’s classic structure with remarkable depth and sensuality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Cos d’Estournel shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a slight brick rim starting to emerge, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is intensely expressive, with layers of blackcurrants, blackberries and plum compote wrapped in notes of cedar, cigar box, graphite and warm spices. Subtle hints of licorice, truffle, cocoa and smoky oak add complexity with air.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and richly textured, with velvety tannins that are generous yet finely polished. Ripe black fruit and cassis dominate, supported by notes of mocha, clove, sandalwood and a savory, mineral edge typical of Saint-Estèphe. The finish is very long, persistent and beautifully balanced between power and freshness. The 2009 vintage has the concentration and structure for long-term aging; while already drinking superbly now, it has the potential to evolve and gain further nuance over the next 10–20 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
Cos d’Estournel sits on the southern slopes of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary, with a terroir of deep gravel over clay and limestone that is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines benefit from excellent drainage and the moderating influence of the nearby river, helping to achieve ripe, healthy fruit even in warm vintages like 2009. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, parcel by parcel, to preserve the character of each plot. After careful sorting, fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled vats, often with plot-by-plot vinification to fine-tune blending. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a high proportion of which are new, lending subtle spice, structure and longevity while allowing the richness of the vintage and the distinct Saint-Estèphe minerality to shine through.
Food & Serving
This 2009 Cos d’Estournel pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, ribeye or côte de boeuf, game birds, slow-braised beef or veal cheeks, and mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. It also complements dishes with earthy components, such as mushroom ragouts or truffle-infused preparations. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is recommended—at least 1–2 hours for a younger, more primary expression, though even at its current stage of maturity a gentle decant of about an hour helps the wine open and shed any remaining tightness, revealing its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the most iconic estates in the Médoc, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Founded in the early 19th century by the visionary Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, the estate quickly earned a reputation for both its exotic architectural style and the exceptional quality of its wines. Located at the southern edge of Saint-Estèphe, bordering Pauillac, Cos is often described as having the power of Saint-Estèphe with the refinement of its famous neighbor. Over the decades, the château has invested heavily in meticulous vineyard management and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, cementing its status as one of the flagships of the Left Bank. The 2009 vintage is widely regarded as one of the modern greats of Cos d’Estournel, frequently lauded by critics and collectors for its opulence, depth and remarkable aging potential.
