Cos D'estournel 2ème Grand Cru Classé Saint-Estèphe, 2012

Cos d’Estournel 2012 is a powerful and beautifully structured Saint-Estèphe that shows why this historic estate is regarded as one of Bordeaux’s great Second Growths. Known for its exotic style, depth and precision, it combines classic Left Bank Cabernet character with the richer, more muscular personality of its gravel-and-clay terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with a dark, concentrated core. The nose is layered with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco and subtle spice, often lifted by hints of violet, cocoa and earthy undertones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and firmly built, with ripe dark fruit supported by tight tannins, freshness and a long, savory finish. The 2012 vintage can already be approached with proper decanting, but it will continue to develop complexity with age, gaining more truffle, leather and cedary nuance over the next decade or more.

Production
Cos d’Estournel is located in Saint-Estèphe on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly rises and clay-limestone soils help produce Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wines with both power and freshness. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work and careful sorting at harvest, with vinification designed to preserve intensity, structure and purity of fruit before aging in French oak barrels.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, game dishes and rich mushroom-based preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening young or if you want to soften the tannins and bring out the aromatics.

Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Estèphe and was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, the château became known for its distinctive style and for helping define the reputation of the appellation. Today it remains a benchmark producer in Bordeaux, admired for consistency, ambition and age-worthy wines.
