Description
Corte Sant'Alda Ca' Fiui Valpolicella Bio 2022 is a beautifully crafted, organically grown red from the hills of Veneto that shows just how serious “simple” Valpolicella can be. Light on its feet yet impressively structured, it’s made for relaxed drinking but has the depth to satisfy more demanding palates. This certified organic, biodynamically farmed cuvée brings together classic local varieties in a wine that honours tradition while delivering a remarkably pure, terroir-driven expression.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Ca’ Fiui Valpolicella shows a bright, translucent ruby red with violet highlights—inviting and youthful, with the clarity you expect from a thoughtfully made, unoaky Italian red. The nose is vivid and fragrant, with notes of fresh cherry, wild strawberry and crunchy redcurrant, layered with hints of dried herbs, rose petals, a touch of spice and a delicate, stony nuance that speaks of its hillside origins.
On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied, juicy and vibrant, driven by red cherry and sour cherry fruit, with accents of cranberry, blood orange zest and a subtle, savory earthiness. The tannins are fine and lightly gripping, giving the wine shape without weighing it down, while the fresh, mouthwatering acidity makes it extremely drinkable—especially slightly chilled. This is a wine made for early enjoyment over the next few years, when its bright fruit and energy are at their peak, rather than for long-term cellaring.
Production
The grapes for Ca’ Fiui Valpolicella Bio 2022 come from vineyards at around 350 meters above sea level in the hills of Valpolicella, with a southeast exposure and relatively poor, stony soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. The blend stays true to the traditional composition—primarily Corvina Veronese and Corvinone (often referred to locally as Corvina grossa), supported by Rondinella, Molinara and a small proportion of other native varieties. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with an emphasis on soil health and biodiversity, and all grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts in large 4,000‑litre oak vats, a gentle, low‑intervention approach that preserves the wine’s bright fruit and sense of place; maturation continues in these large casks or neutral vessels, avoiding heavy oak influence and keeping the style fresh, precise and authentic.
Food & Serving
This Valpolicella is wonderfully versatile at the table. It’s a natural partner for classic Italian fare such as wood‑fired pizza, tomato‑based pastas, lasagne, grilled sausages, roast chicken, antipasti platters with cured meats, and semi‑hard cheeses like Asiago or young Pecorino. It also works beautifully with lighter dishes—herb‑roasted vegetables, mushroom risotto or chargrilled tuna. Serve at 14–16 °C; in warmer weather, a brief chill in the fridge (10–15 minutes) enhances its brightness and drinkability. Decanting is not essential, but a short splash into a carafe 20–30 minutes before serving can help the aromas open up, especially in the first year after release.
Producer
Corte Sant’Alda is the winegrowing arm of Azienda Agricola Camerani, a family‑run estate that has become one of the benchmarks for artisanal, organically and biodynamically produced Valpolicella. Based in the hills north of Verona, the winery has long championed a return to respectful, low‑input farming and traditional methods, at a time when much of the region was dominated by volume‑driven production. Their commitment to hand‑harvesting, native varieties, spontaneous fermentations and minimal intervention in the cellar has earned them a loyal following among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts worldwide. Today, Corte Sant’Alda is regarded as one of the key producers showing just how refined, characterful and terroir‑expressive Valpolicella can be—from its more approachable cuvées like Ca’ Fiui to its more structured, ageworthy bottlings.
