Description

Corte Giara Valpolicella Ripasso La Groletta 2023 brings the character of classic Valpolicella into a richer, more layered expression, thanks to the traditional Ripasso technique. Made in partnership with Allegrini, one of Veneto’s most respected names, this red offers impressive depth and warmth while remaining vibrantly drinkable. It’s an excellent choice for those looking to step up from everyday Italian reds into something more complex, yet still approachable.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Groletta Ripasso 2023 shows a deep ruby red color with bright garnet highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and intensity. The nose opens with ripe red cherries and blackberries, followed by notes of dried plum, violets, and a subtle hint of sweet spice—think cinnamon, clove, and a touch of cocoa. Underneath, you may notice a delicate herbal edge and a whisper of tobacco that add complexity without heaviness. On the palate, this Ripasso is medium to full-bodied, with a velvety texture and well-integrated tannins. Flavors of juicy cherry and dark forest fruits mingle with dried fruit tones, gentle spice, and a savory, slightly earthy finish. The Ripasso process adds extra richness and length, giving the wine a warming, satisfying character while keeping the acidity lively and fresh. While it is very enjoyable now in its youthful, fruit-forward phase, it has the structure to evolve nicely over the next 4–6 years, gaining more tertiary notes of dried herbs, leather, and sweet spice with time in bottle.

Production
Corte Giara is Allegrini’s project focused on expressing the classic terroir of Veneto in a contemporary, approachable style. The grapes for La Groletta Ripasso come from hillside vineyards in Valpolicella, where well-drained, limestone- and clay-rich soils combine with good exposure and cooling breezes from nearby Lake Garda. Grapes—primarily Corvina with Rondinella and local varieties—are harvested at optimal ripeness, usually by hand, to preserve fruit integrity. After the initial fermentation of the Valpolicella base wine, it is re-fermented (“ripassato”) on the dried grape skins left from Amarone production, which deepens color, body, and flavor complexity. The wine then matures in a combination of stainless steel and oak, refining its texture and integrating fruit and spice before release.

Food & Serving
This Valpolicella Ripasso is a natural partner for rich, comforting dishes. Try it with slow-braised beef, ossobuco, roast lamb, pork shoulder, or game stews, as well as hearty pasta with ragù, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, grilled sausages, and wood-fired pizza with robust toppings. Serve at around 16–18°C to highlight both its freshness and depth. A short decant of 30–45 minutes will help the aromas open up and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its youth.
