Description
Corino Barbera d'Alba Ciabot du Re 2022 is a vibrant, characterful Barbera from one of La Morra’s most respected family estates. This cuvée captures the richness and energy of Barbera grown on Barolo-classified hillsides, offering serious quality at a still-approachable price. Named “Ciabot du Re” – the King’s little house – it pays homage to a historic vineyard plot that has long been prized for its concentration and elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Ciabot du Re shows a deep, luminous ruby-purple hue, hinting at both intensity and freshness. The nose opens with ripe red and black cherries, wild berries and plum compote, layered with violets, sweet spice, a touch of licorice and a gentle whisper of cocoa from oak aging.
On the palate, this Barbera is juicy and generous, with Barbera’s hallmark acidity giving lift and precision to the ripe fruit. Flavors of cherry, blackberry and red currant are wrapped in notes of baking spice, tobacco leaf and a faint mineral edge that reflects its Piedmontese origins. The tannins are fine and polished, giving structure without heaviness, making it both food-friendly and highly drinkable. While delicious in its youth, the 2022 has the concentration and balance to evolve gracefully over 5–7 years, developing more savory, earthy complexity with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Corino’s Ciabot du Re come from Barbera vines rooted in the rolling hills of La Morra in Piemonte, an area better known for Barolo but equally capable of producing outstanding Barbera d’Alba. Here, calcareous clay and marl soils, along with good elevation and exposure, deliver both richness and refreshing acidity in the fruit. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters reach the cellar. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, the wine is macerated to extract color and flavor while preserving Barbera’s natural vibrancy. It is then aged in oak (often a mix of barriques and larger barrels), allowing the tannins to soften and the wine to gain complexity without losing its expressive fruit.
Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is an excellent match for classic Italian cuisine, especially dishes from Piemonte. Pair it with rich pasta dishes such as tagliatelle al ragù, lasagna, or porcini mushroom risotto; it also shines alongside grilled sausages, roast chicken, veal scaloppine and hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. A brief decant of 30 minutes can help open up the aromatics, though it’s not strictly necessary; simply giving the wine some air in the glass will allow its layers to unfold.
Producer
Corino Giovanni is a family-run estate based in La Morra, in the heart of Piemonte’s Barolo zone. Founded in the mid-20th century, the winery has steadily built a reputation for crafting Barolo and regional wines that combine traditional Piedmontese character with meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, modern winemaking. Over the years, Corino has become especially appreciated for giving the so-called “secondary” grapes of the region—like Barbera—the same care and attention usually reserved for Nebbiolo. Their Barbera d’Alba bottlings, including Ciabot du Re, are now regarded as benchmarks for the style, offering depth, purity of fruit and a clear expression of Piedmont’s noble terroir.
