Description
Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is a quintessential, classically styled Brunello that marries depth, elegance, and energy in one compelling bottle. From a benchmark vintage in Montalcino, this wine shows the house’s signature balance between power and finesse, making it both immediately captivating and worthy of contemplation. Sourced from the historic Colle al Matrichese estate, it reflects centuries of Costanti family presence in the region and the long tradition of pure Sangiovese (Brunello) from these prized hillsides.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Conti Costanti shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections beginning to develop at the rim, hinting at its early evolution. The nose opens with plum-like dark fruit and dried blackberries, followed by subtle layers of dried cherry, wild herbs, tobacco leaf, and a touch of spice and underbrush that speak clearly of Montalcino.
On the palate, this Brunello is both vinous and refined, with an initial surge of ripe black and red fruit—black plum, blackberry, and macerated cherry—wrapped in fine, tactile tannins. Despite the intensity suggested by the bouquet, the mouthfeel is more delicate and supple than expected, with a beautifully composed mid-palate and a long, harmonious finish that echoes notes of dried fruit, sweet spice, and a hint of earth. The 2015 vintage has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 12–20+ years from the vintage, but it is already showing impressive balance and drinkability now after a brief aeration.
Production
The grapes for Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 2015 come from the estate’s Colle al Matrichese vineyards, set on the slopes around Montalcino where altitude, stony marl and galestro soils, and a pronounced diurnal range help Sangiovese ripen slowly and retain vivid acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, allowing a strict selection of the healthiest, perfectly mature clusters. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified with a focus on expressing the purity of Sangiovese: temperature-controlled fermentations, extended maceration for color and structure, and maturation in large Slavonian and/or French oak casks over several years to polish the tannins without overwhelming the fruit, followed by bottle aging before release to ensure harmony and complexity.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, game birds, truffle risotto, and aged pecorino or other fine hard cheeses. Its balance of fruit, acidity, and structure allows it to stand up to hearty sauces and roasted meats, while its finesse complements more subtly flavored Tuscan fare. Serve at 17–18°C (around 63–65°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses. Decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if the bottle is served on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Conti Costanti is one of Montalcino’s historic noble estates, with roots tracing back several centuries and a long‑standing role in shaping the identity of Brunello. Among the earliest producers to champion the potential of pure Sangiovese from these hills, Costanti helped define the classic, ageworthy style that made Brunello di Montalcino famous worldwide. Today, the estate is recognized for its rigorous vineyard work, traditional yet precise winemaking, and consistently high quality across vintages, with numerous critical accolades underscoring its status as one of the reference producers of the region.
