Description

Conte Vistarino Pernice Pinot Nero 2020 is a refined Italian expression of Pinot Noir from the rolling hills of Lombardy. Grown in one of the estate’s most suitable plots for this demanding grape, it combines Burgundian elegance with a distinctly northern Italian brightness and structure. This cuvée stands out for its precision, finesse, and the way it reflects both history and terroir in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pernice Pinot Nero 2020 shows a luminous, medium ruby color with delicate garnet reflections toward the rim. The nose is graceful and layered: wild strawberries, red cherries, and raspberry coulis mingle with notes of rose petal, violets, subtle spice, and a gentle undertone of forest floor and fine oak. On the palate, it is silky and poised, with a fresh, linear acidity that carries pure red fruit flavors—think crunchy cherry and cranberry—supported by very fine, velvety tannins. Hints of dried herbs, sweet baking spice, and a touch of mineral sapidity emerge on the long, elegant finish. The 2020 vintage is approachable now but has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 6–10 years, gaining more complexity, tertiary notes, and additional textural harmony with time in bottle.

Production
Cascina Pernice lies in the heart of the historic Rocca de’ Giorgi Estate in Oltrepò Pavese, an area long recognized as one of Italy’s most suitable terroirs for Pinot Nero. The vineyards benefit from hilly exposures, well-draining calcareous-clay soils, and a temperate microclimate influenced by the nearby Apennines, allowing for slow, even ripening. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe clusters, preserving the delicacy that Pinot Nero demands. In the cellar, vinification focuses on gentle extraction and precision—cool macerations, controlled fermentations, and aging in carefully chosen wood (often a mix of barriques and larger oak) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the grape’s natural elegance. The result is a wine that clearly communicates its origin and the finesse of its variety.

Food & Serving
Conte Vistarino Pernice Pinot Nero 2020 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes that mirror its finesse. Try it with roasted poultry (such as herb-roasted chicken or duck breast), veal scaloppine, pork tenderloin, mushroom risotto, or delicate game birds. It also complements medium-aged cheeses and charcuterie with subtle seasoning. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, while older bottles can be served directly from the bottle with gentle handling.

Producer
Conte Vistarino is a historic name in Oltrepò Pavese and a true reference point for Pinot Nero in Italy. It was Count Carlo Vistarino who first introduced Pinot Nero to the region in 1850, importing vines directly from Burgundy and pioneering the grape’s cultivation in Lombardy. Since then, the estate has been closely linked to the development and reputation of Pinot Nero in the area, combining deep-rooted tradition with a modern, quality-driven approach in both vineyard and cellar. Today, Conte Vistarino is recognized for its contribution to raising the profile of Oltrepò Pavese wines—particularly Pinot Nero—on both the Italian and international stage, with Pernice standing as one of its flagship expressions.
