Description
Colterenzio Pinot Bianco Berg Riserva 2022 is a refined expression of Alto Adige’s flagship white grape, sourced exclusively from the historic Eppan Berg (Appiano Monte) hillside. This is where Pinot Bianco has long found its most celebrated home in South Tyrol, yielding wines of striking clarity and poise. The 2022 Berg Riserva combines ripe alpine fruit with a precise, stony backbone, offering a polished, gastronomic white that stands comfortably among Italy’s most characterful Pinot Biancos.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Bianco shows a luminous straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youthful energy. The nose opens with pure aromas of crisp green apple, pear and white peach, layered with notes of citrus zest, spring flowers and a subtle saline, mineral edge that reflects its mountain origins.
On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with juicy orchard fruit framed by vibrant acidity and a fine, chalky texture. Hints of almond, fresh herbs and wet stone linger on the long, elegant finish, adding complexity without heaviness. Enjoyable now for its vivid fruit and precision, it also has the structure and acidity to develop further complexity over the next 4–6 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Berg Riserva come exclusively from the Eppan Berg (Appiano Monte) area in Trentino-Alto Adige, a renowned hillside zone in South Tyrol noted for its cool alpine climate, sun-exposed slopes and calcareous, well-drained soils—conditions ideal for nuanced, mineral-driven Pinot Bianco. The fruit is carefully hand-selected at optimal ripeness to preserve both aromatics and natural acidity. In the cellar, Colterenzio employs gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation, typically in a combination of stainless steel and large oak or neutral vessels, followed by maturation on the fine lees to build texture, depth and complexity while maintaining the grape’s hallmark precision and freshness.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Bianco is a versatile food wine that shines alongside delicate yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or poached fish, shellfish, sushi, asparagus, vegetable risottos, grilled chicken, and mild alpine cheeses. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into larger white wine glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the subtle floral and mineral notes unfold.
