Description
Colpetrone Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito 2016 (0.375L) is a richly concentrated sweet red from the heart of Umbria, crafted from one of Italy’s most characterful native grapes, Sagrantino. This half-bottle format is ideal for sharing after a meal, offering an intense yet elegant dessert wine experience that balances power, sweetness and structure. Made in the traditional passito style, it showcases the historic expression of Sagrantino as it was enjoyed in Montefalco long before the dry versions became famous.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Passito shows a deep, impenetrable ruby core with garnet reflections, hinting at its concentration and age. The nose is complex and inviting, with aromas of dried black cherries, plum compote and blackberry jam layered with notes of fig, dates and candied orange peel. Accents of cocoa, sweet spices, roasted coffee, licorice and a touch of balsamic and dried herbs add depth and refinement.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, velvety and intensely flavored, offering a luxurious interplay between natural sweetness and Sagrantino’s hallmark tannic backbone. Flavors of dried dark fruits, blackcurrant preserves and Christmas cake mingle with hints of dark chocolate, espresso and sweet tobacco, all lifted by a fresh acidity that keeps the wine vibrant rather than cloying. The finish is long, warm and persistent, with lingering notes of cocoa-dusted cherries and spice. Thanks to its robust structure and high-quality fruit, the 2016 vintage has excellent aging potential; properly cellared, it can develop further complexity over 10–15 years or more, gaining notes of leather, forest floor and truffle while maintaining its core of dried fruit richness.
Production
Sourced from hillside vineyards around Montefalco in Umbria, Colpetrone’s Sagrantino vines grow on clay- and limestone-rich soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, promotes slow, even ripening and preserves acidity in this naturally powerful grape. Grapes destined for the Passito are hand-harvested at optimum ripeness and then carefully laid out to dry (appassimento) for several weeks to concentrate sugars, aromas and tannins. After gentle pressing of the semi-dried berries, fermentation proceeds slowly to retain aromatic intensity, followed by maturation in a combination of oak (often barriques and/or larger barrels) and bottle to polish the tannins and integrate the wine’s sweetness, structure and complex aromatics. The result is a traditional yet finely crafted expression of Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito.
Food & Serving
This Sagrantino Passito is a superb match for dark chocolate desserts, flourless chocolate torte, chocolate and hazelnut cakes and rich tiramisu. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses (such as Parmigiano Reggiano or pecorino), blue cheeses and desserts based on dried fruits, nuts and spices—think fig tart, almond biscotti or panforte. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the layered aromas of dried fruit, spice and cocoa to fully express themselves.
