Description

Colgin Cariad is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated Bordeaux-style reds, sourced from the legendary David Abreu vineyards and crafted with remarkable precision. The 2013 vintage captures the hallmark Colgin style: power, elegance, and profound depth, all wrapped in a wine named "Cariad," the Welsh word for love. A benchmark release from one of California’s most elite producers, it has the structure and pedigree to age gracefully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet hue with impressive concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, offering blackcurrant, blackberry, cocoa, tar, liquorice, violet, and a distinctive pencil shaving note, all underpinned by a subtle earthy, scorched-stone character. The palate is full-bodied and seamless, combining dense dark fruit with refined tannins and superb balance. Despite its intensity, the wine remains polished and elegant, with a long, persistent finish that lingers beautifully. While already compelling, it is built for the long haul and should continue to evolve over the next 25–30 years, if not longer.

Production
Cariad is a Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley, composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The fruit comes from the volcanic, mineral-rich Cariad vineyard, where warm sunshine is moderated by a cooler climate, helping preserve freshness and aromatic detail. After fermentation, the wine is aged for two years in 100% new French oak, giving it depth, structure, and extra layers of complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavoured dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, venison, braised short ribs, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for one to two hours to allow the wine to open fully and show its full aromatic range.

Producer
Founded by Ann Colgin in 1992, Colgin Cellars has become one of Napa Valley’s most revered names, known for producing intensely elegant wines with extraordinary consistency. The estate’s reputation grew rapidly, and by 2005 it was already ranked among the world’s top wine houses by Robert Parker. In 2017, Colgin became the only American winery to join LVMH’s strategic portfolio and the prestigious Vins d’Exception group, underscoring its place among the global elite.
