Description

Cogno Barbera d'Alba Pre-Phylloxera 2022 is a rare glimpse into Piedmont’s past, crafted from centenarian, ungrafted Barbera vines that survived the phylloxera epidemic. This is Barbera in its purest, most authentic form, offering depth, energy and an almost haunting sense of place. For collectors and curious wine lovers alike, it’s a compelling expression that bridges tradition and modern precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pre-Phylloxera shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is intense and refined, with layers of wild cherry, ripe plum and blackberry woven together with violet, dried rose petal, sweet spice, anise and a subtle mineral edge. Gentle notes of cedar, cocoa and blood orange zest emerge with air, adding complexity and nuance. On the palate, this Barbera is full-bodied yet beautifully balanced, with the naturally high acidity of the grape giving great lift to the ripe, dark fruit. Flavors of black cherry, mulberry and raspberry compote are framed by fine, chalky tannins and a savory undertone of tobacco leaf, forest floor and iron-rich earth. The finish is long, energetic and mouthwatering, with a tension that speaks to the old, ungrafted vines. While already expressive in its youth, the structure and freshness suggest a solid aging potential of 8–12 years from the vintage, during which it will gain further complexity and silkier texture.

Production
The grapes for Cogno Barbera d'Alba Pre-Phylloxera come from a tiny, historic parcel in Novello, within the Barolo area of Piemonte, planted with pre-phylloxera, ungrafted Barbera vines that are well over a century old. Rooted directly into the native calcareous-clay soils with veins of sand and marl, these deep-rooted vines deliver naturally low yields and exceptional concentration. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with rigorous bunch selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to preserve only the healthiest fruit. Vinification is traditional yet precise: a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or cement, followed by maturation—often in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks—to respect the purity of the fruit and the distinct character of the old vines, while adding subtle texture and polish.

Food & Serving
This Barbera’s intensity and vibrant acidity make it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with rich Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo, veal shank, or agnolotti del plin in meat jus. It also works wonderfully with roasted lamb, grilled sausages, duck, truffle-infused recipes, aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino, and earthy mushroom-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); a brief decant of 45–60 minutes will help open up the aromatics and soften the structure, especially in the wine’s first several years.

Producer
The Cogno estate, founded by the legendary Elvio Cogno and now run by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore, is one of the benchmark producers in the Barolo area of Novello. With deep roots in Piemonte and a strong focus on the Ravera cru, the family has built a reputation for wines that combine traditional methods with meticulous vineyard work. Cogno has been instrumental in highlighting the potential of both classic Nebbiolo and native varieties like Barbera and Nascetta, earning critical acclaim and a loyal following worldwide. The Pre-Phylloxera Barbera is one of the estate’s crown jewels, showcasing their dedication to preserving historic vineyards and expressing the unique identity of Novello’s terroir.
