Description
Clusel-Roch Viognier 2023 is a dry white Rhône wine with Viognier's apricot glow, gentle oak spice, and the Ampuis domaine's cool granite feel near Côte-Rôtie. This is the polished, quietly aromatic side of a producer better known for serious northern Rhône reds. Peach, honeysuckle and baking spice make it feel generous from the first pour.
About the Wine
The 2023 Clusel-Roch Viognier comes from organically farmed vines rooted in granite and schist around the northern Rhône home of the estate. For a producer whose name is closely tied to Côte-Rôtie reds, this white puts the floral side of Viognier into an Ampuis frame. The soils leave a stony edge under the ripe orchard fruit, and the 12.5% alcohol gives the 2023 a measured frame. Organic certification fits the way Clusel-Roch handles small parcels on these slopes, with farming that favours clarity in the fruit.
In the cellar, the wine is aged in oak barrels and given partial malolactic fermentation. That choice brings a soft curve to Viognier's peach and apricot notes, then a light layer of vanilla and baking spice. The oak feels like a frame around the fruit, with gentle toast sitting behind honeysuckle and ripe yellow plum. The finished wine is dry, with barrel spice sitting close to apricot, peach and a faint almond skin note.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with ripe apricot, peach skin and honeysuckle, then moves into vanilla from the barrel ageing and a little crushed fennel seed from the cool herbal edge. There is a clear 2023 freshness in the line of acidity, which lifts the fruit and gives the wine a brisk northern Rhône pulse for a Viognier raised in wood near Ampuis. Partial malolactic fermentation shows in the mid-palate, where the texture turns creamy around yellow fruit, soft baking spice and a faint note of warm brioche. On the finish Clusel-Roch Viognier 2023 leaves a cool granite impression beside almond, white flowers and ginger, with the dry tail pulling back toward stone and citrus peel. Drink 2025-2028.
Food Pairing
Serve Clusel-Roch Viognier 2023 with fish that has a little richness, such as turbot with brown butter or cod roasted with fennel and lemon. Seafood is a strong direction here, especially seared scallops with cauliflower purée or prawns with saffron cream. For a regional Rhône idea, pour it with pike quenelles in Nantua sauce and let the wine's apricot, vanilla and spice meet the creamy sauce. Roast chicken with tarragon is another good match, especially when the skin is crisp and the juices are lightly reduced. For cheese, choose Saint-Marcellin or another soft cow's milk cheese with a gentle lactic tang.
Producer
Clusel-Roch is rooted in Ampuis, the village at the foot of the Côte-Rôtie slopes, and that location shapes even this white Rhône Viognier. The estate carries the names of Gilbert Clusel and Brigitte Roch, whose family domaine became closely associated with small northern Rhône parcels and a farming-first approach. Organic farming is one of the clearest signatures here, seen in the way the wines keep a direct link to granite, schist and the lifted fruit profile of the northern Rhône. The domaine is best known for Côte-Rôtie reds, so a barrel-aged Viognier from Clusel-Roch feels especially revealing of the house touch outside its usual Syrah spotlight. In the cellar, the hand is measured rather than showy, with oak used to shape texture and spice in a quiet register. This 2023 Viognier reflects that same discipline through moderate alcohol, dry balance and a finish that carries stone fruit back toward the cool mineral feel of Ampuis.
