Description

Clusel-Roch Coteaux du Lyonnais Chardonnay 2022 is a dry Chardonnay from the Rhône with lemony bite, apple crunch and biodynamic poise in a steel frame. It is a bright white from a producer better known for Ampuis reds. The 2022 carries pineapple, elderflower and a fine grassy snap through a clean stainless steel finish.

About the Wine
The 2022 Clusel-Roch Coteaux du Lyonnais Chardonnay comes from biodynamically farmed vines in the hills around Lyon. This is Chardonnay from the Rhône edge of the Coteaux du Lyonnais, far from the image many drinkers have of Clusel-Roch through Côte-Rôtie Syrah. The soils are granite and schist, and the wine carries that terrain as a firm mineral line rather than a soft fruit wash. The 12.5 percent alcohol also tells you something useful here. The fruit feels picked for freshness, with apple skin, lemon peel and a green herbal note sitting close together. In the cellar, Clusel-Roch keeps this white in stainless steel tanks. That choice suits the direct style of this 2022 Chardonnay, where pineapple and elderflower sit in front of toast or spice. The wine is dry, clear and shaped by acidity rather than cream. There is no oak flavour to work around here. The finish stays tight and citrus-led, with a small grassy note that links back to the first smell from the glass.

Tasting Notes
The first impression is fresh elderflower, cut apple and a little pineapple, with a green note that feels closer to crushed grass than to tropical sweetness. On the palate, the 2022 Clusel-Roch Coteaux du Lyonnais Chardonnay is dry and brisk, with lemon juice acidity running through the centre of the wine. The fruit is clean and compact, moving from apple flesh to lemon zest, then toward a stony finish that fits the granite and schist origin. The stainless steel ageing keeps the texture straight and lively, so the 12.5 percent alcohol feels agile rather than broad. Drink 2024-2026.

Food Pairing
This Clusel-Roch Chardonnay is a natural match for grilled sea bream with lemon, where its apple and lemon notes echo the fish rather than cover it. It also has the acidity for shellfish, especially prawns with garlic, parsley and a little olive oil. For a regional pairing, try it with cervelle de canut from Lyon, served with raw vegetables or toasted bread. The wine’s elderflower and grassy edge also suit a warm goat cheese salad, particularly with fennel, cucumber or green beans. If you want a richer plate, quenelles de brochet with a light Nantua-style sauce will make the wine feel even more precise and citrus-driven.

Producer
Clusel-Roch is based in Ampuis, the village tied closely to Côte-Rôtie, so this Coteaux du Lyonnais Chardonnay sits in a portfolio many people first meet through Syrah. That is the useful producer clue here: the bottle comes from a family domaine that gives a modest white from west of Lyon the same estate focus as its famous red slopes. The Clusel and Roch names came together through Gilbert Clusel and Brigitte Roch, and the domaine has remained small enough for farming choices to be visible in the glass. Biodynamic certification on this Chardonnay is a concrete part of that identity, with the 2022 showing clean citrus, a slight grassy edge and a stainless steel Chardonnay signature. I like how the producer’s Côte-Rôtie background gives extra interest to this Lyonnais bottle: it feels like a side door into Clusel-Roch, with apple skin, elderflower and granite snap replacing the darker perfume people expect from Ampuis Syrah. The 12.5 percent alcohol also suits the way the domaine frames this wine, with dry fruit, lemon zest and a lean line through the finish.
